How is the winter going?

I don't live anywhere close to MT. All I know is what I've heard from a western MT resident, some posters on another site and watching the weather regularly. It seems like the eastern part of the state has had a somewhat tougher than average winter. From what I understand it's not nearly as bad as the winters the NE region saw in 2010 and 2011, but still tough nonetheless. I think the next 6 weeks or so will be telling. If snow keeps coming then it will get bad. If there is no snow and a warm up, it will turn out okay.

Hopefully a local guy or two can chime in?

It's been bad and we're still getting good amounts of snow the past few weeks/days. After the drought all summer, it's not going to be a good outcome for the deer and antelope herds. I hear that the eastern part of the state is even worse off.

The western half of the state is certainly having an above average winter. Currently nearly every major watershed is at 130-160% normal.I've had 25+ inches at my house in the last week here in Livingston. On my monthly drive to North Dakota the snow doesn't seem any worse than usual and I still see piles of deer especially around miles city and ferry. Not a great "out among em" report but a little insight.

If anybody wants to get a good idea of what's going on in MT this winter, check out the deer forum on onyourownadventures.com. There's alot of knowledgeable, stand up MT guys there. You can trust their word.

the south east part of the state has endured the worst winter in recent memory. The only debate is whether this winter is worse than the winter of 78-79. Add this winter to the abnormally dry summer last year and it is not looking good for wild life.
