Official Wolf Sighting Thread

So now that most of the deer and elk seasons are over I thought it was a good idea to start this thread. We are all pretty secretive our hunting spots for deer and elk...but with wolves we need to share as much info as possible.

SO PLEASE POST UP YOUR WOLF SIGHTINGS SO THAT IF YOU CAN'T MAKE IT OUT TO HUNT FOR ONE MAYBE SOMEONE ELSE CAN.

ALSO IF YOU FIND A RECENT KILL WITH WOLF TRACKS NEARBY PLEASE POST THAT UP.

We need to work together to meet the quotas.

Not that this will help the average wolf hunter, but I saw one in the Middle Fork country and heard them howling at night near the Camas Creek confluence around Nov. 15. Of course the whole Middle Fork is great wolf country, but unfortunately you have to mount an expedition to reach it.

Another bit of truly useless wolf information is that I saw at least 4 and possibly as many as 7 separate wolves on the National Elk Refuge while cow elk hunting there this past Friday. I had one within 75 yards that howled at me. They were howling and running around all morning, which was actually pretty cool to witness. I killed a cow late in the day way up on the north end and cut it up and left the meat bags near the kill site overnight until yesterday afternoon, and was pleased to find that they didn't touch it. They're probably so gorged on gut piles on the south half that they don't venture north as much.

Saw fresh sign last week above lowman on the warm springs road. I wanted to go back but couldn't make it. There has been snow since then so they are probably lower. They where mixed with elk tracks as expected.

good post I am from over on the west side of the state & regularly hunt & trap units 22 31 32 40 & 41 for yotes & I have only come across a few old tracks..did hear a few howling during archery & a buddy saw 3 & my son saw 1..if anyone has seen or heard any on this side & wants to share where I have tags & the desire to thin those big mtn yotes...so lets help our deer & elk herds out this winter Kill a couple of wolves & as many yotes as u can

There are supposed to be a bunch around the XO ranch near Huckleberry Campground out of Council.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-07-11 AT 01:18PM (MST)[p]Probably been posted on another thread but YouTube: hunter becomes the hunted in Idaho wolf attack. glad to hear she's ok and nice shootin! as a former guide I have a few spots were I used to see them regularly but have not been to those areas in a while: Riggins- old and new Florence area, wind river pack trail up to black butte *hootchie mamma and hot lips work best*. Upper Payette Lake- north and east end can usually hear them howling, ?snow butte, snow flake mtn, something like that?, and anywhere around Burgdorf hot springs *be careful there's a no hunting zone some wildlife preserve.* good luck

Would I be wrong in stating the wolves will likely move with their favorite prey, elk, as they move to wintering grounds. I know the elk have started to move, but not in force, here in SW Idaho as only the highest peaks have held what snow they received in Early Nov.

Thats what I'm counting on, just keep bird hunting til it snows more than switch over to wolf hunting...

BKP you are probably right, but I just started this thread hoping to share info to help kill more wolves. The last time they had a season I saw a dead elk on the ice up at arrowrock resi and a week later two guys kills two wolves close by. I couldn't make it back up until later but I'm glad they did.

If I find a kill this year that I don't have time to hunt off of it, I'll certainly on here letting everyone know where its at.

I heard a guy got one north of Carrie a few days ago.Said he cut some fresh tracks and followed them to the pack.It was a little bit of a hike to catch up but finally got it done.I know its a little east of the pine area but if you dont find anything around pine it mint be worth the drive.I dont know about recently but during deer season we saw lots of tracks up Lime creek,(43/44 border).Talked to some bear hunters that said they lost some dogs to wolves and wont go back in there. It mint be worth checking out. We just parked at the reservoir and walked from there, its a hell of a hike to start off with but if your familiar with the area you already know that.Good luck to everyone whos going and shoot 2 of the bastards.

We were down for the muzz cow hunt in 78 and saw 6 fresh tracks right off the side of the road up st. Charles. Right next to the dumpsters at 1st campground. Didn't have the time or snow machine to go try to get em.

>this no snow is not helping
>but im gonna try for
>the upcoming weekends has anyone
>heard of anything around pine
>area

I'm heading up that area this weekend as well. Saw some up there during deer season, one buddy shot a couple as well but he saw a group of 16. You might consider going a bit higher. There is only 22" of snow on Trinity. I plan on looking for the deer and elk then starting from there.

Saw one tonight in lightning creek unit 1 two days ago 11 sets of tracks side by side in the road. They are in this road every night. This is however very hard country to hunt, steep & heavily timbered.

A couple buddies and I want to come up from Northern Nevada to hunt some of these killing machines. Any suggestions on where to go in Southern Idaho? Or would we be better off going farther north? Thanks for any info you guys can give.

Farther north would be best. None have been killed in the southern idaho region yet.

Awesome thread, plan on heading out after my shoulder heals up from the surgery. Good luck to everyone, lets help our herds out!!

he updates fast! i emailed him my sighting two days ago. he emailed me back that day and said it would be up the following day....and it was. it was from november, but he still put it in there. if you follow yoyaks link, make sure to click the HOME page button if you want to report anything. you cant do it from the map page.

2 black wolves were spotted off the freeway between Boise and Mountain Home. A few miles west of the 1st mountain home exit where the burger king is, there is a grassy butte on the north side of the freeway where you'll almost always see antelope and sometimes a few elk.

That is where they were spotted around 9am today 1/6/12. I'm stuck at work, someone go kill them please.

The elk have been wintering on those flats for the past few years. F&G even had to change the 39 hunts to accomodate how low the elk have been. Wolves aren't stupid. Of course that is not that far from Grandview and the Owyhee's.

I got a call on 1 black , 1 Grey wolves off the freeway north side of raft river exit. The ran horses through the fence rancher had to put both horses down, I looked 2 days for them and nothing showed up

This is a great thread for info , I hunted 3 days for the wolves in St Charles area followed tracks sat on fresh kills and couldn't close the deal ran out of time, just got a call from F G and they are going to fly it next week. Keep the info coming in, I'm going back in a few weeks.

I heard of a couple more sightings/harvests in recent weeks.

Weekend of Jan 7-8, a 90lb female was killed near Lowman. Also heard another story of a small collared female killed near Lowman that same weekend by some guys from Utah. Might have been the same wolf, not sure. A friend of mine who was up there that day said there was wolf sign everywhere.

Another wolf was killed just east of Fairfield today. People getting it done out there...HELL YA!!!

If nobody has any plans for this weekend, it would be a great weekend to get out and look for wolves after the storms hit.

Good luck everyone.

I'm headed up to Fairfield this weekend. I would appreciate any info on where some wolves area hanging out. I've got permission to hunt some private land, and I've hunted east and west of fairfield, so I'm fairly familiar with the land. I understand 2 wolves have been killing sheep just a mile and a half east of town, any other info would be awesome.

Also, I know they got alot of snow lately, will I be able to get around on my 4-wheeler or do I need to take a sled?

Thanks

In my experience small towns are pretty unified against wolves and a lot of people carry a rifle in their trucks. So wouldn't expect so see many wolves near town. The Ranchers would probably be a good source if you can figure out how to get ahold of them. There is also a forest service ranger station in town that might have some info or phone numbers of locals who know where to go.

I just think its awesome how they've killed 257 wolves so far this year! That is a TON of deer and elk saved and we still got a ways to go!

Mike

Damn wolves keep givin me the slip, saw a few before the season was open, now I can't find one.

Had a shot at one yesterday by mile post 81 by Lohman, nicked him but no kill. There are tons of tracks and howling on both sides of the river. Never saw another hunter, there really needs to be some presure put on these guys. They were pattering a herd of Elk when i came into contact with them.

Just saw one last weekend at the very back end of Nethker Creek across from Burgdorf.

Has anybody seen any wolves in Eastern Idaho? Any in Island Park or Palisades area?

I hunted Palisades last fall for Shiras. I didn't see any wolves but we saw a lot of sign, heard them howl and talking to a herder in the area he had lost several sheep over the summer. This was the Pine Creek area north of 21.

brdhuntr I was hunting 67-1 and I spent a ridiculous amount of time over there. I shot my bull on day 17 I believe. I saw plenty of cows. Do you have tag? Shoot me a PM and I can help you on a couple of spots depending on if you are walking in, horses, atv etc.

That's the pack my son and I are going to chase this weekend.

Thanks for the reply, no i don't have a tag, was thinking about putting in next year. Looks like decent odds to draw, and i killed my bull in 2007 in unit 14,and got lucky and got a 45 incher. The meat is great, and i would think a cow would be even tastier. Good Luck in your'e hunts this year!

IDFG harvest page shows 6 down so far, lets all share whatever information we can. Unfortunately I haven't got any at the moment.

I keep checking this page almost every other day, Im currently overseas and Ill be back in December. I plan on seeing if I can get into some of these varmints with my new long range setup! keep up the post guys I love to see them

Spoke with a buddy thats been archery hunting in 49 up past the old Garfield Ranger station. He saw a nice big grey dog on saturday. Its no big surprise, there are lots of them running around in that area.

Saw some tracks and worked with a guy who saw 2 up coal harden creek by stanly

LAST EDITED ON Oct-03-12 AT 03:21PM (MST)[p]Rode in off Big elk creek to Hayden canyon and saw what appeared to be at least a dozen wolves North of Palisades!!

off the Rangdon road to the north west is where the two were spotted ant the coal harden atv trail is where the tracks were. there is alot of elk and deer up there and there is alot of country that is now open due to the fire that was thick timber in the past. The animals are there and are in the burned areas. I hope this will help someone find some wolves so that the elk and deer have a chance the utalize the new forage in the burned area. Some areas had good new grass in the burn that will be a good thing for the elk and deer. Good Hunthing.

LETS KEEP THE WOLF NEWS & SIGHTINGS GOING, I PLAN TO HUNT THE CENTRAL PART OF IDAHO IN JAN,FEB THIS YEAR. I COULD USE THE SIGHTING INFO...........THANKS,. (IF YOU HAVE SOME WOLF HUNTING LOCATIONS/OR TIPS I WOULD LOVE A PM)........THANKS.........YD.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-04-12 AT 04:34PM (MST)[p]a buddy and i watched a solo wolf go toe to toe with the herd we shot our 5 pts out of. they were way far off so a shot was not even in the question. he was working the ridge line that seperates the willow creek and elk creek drainages...northeast of fairfield on 10-26-12.

Star, Idaho this past Saturday atabout 7am (11.3.12)
On the backside of Floating feather road by the Star cemetary. 2 of them, almost hit them with my car, probably should have. 1 black and 1 grey one.

Crazy!

Anybody seen any recently?

I have 2-3 days I can dedicate to hunting this weekend and I'd like to chase some wolves.

Preferably within 2 hours of Boise.

Lowman?

Featherville?

Pine?

Fairfield?

What do you guys think?

On 11/26/12 morning.

Off of FS rd 1803 by Elk City. Gated rd to left just below FS rd
1803 E. 2 different wolves howling simultaneously. Just above clear cut 1.5 miles down road.

>I killed a wolf last friday
>at around 7000 feet in
>about 4 inches of snow.
> He was just running
>ridges way up high.

lol......that is specific....

LAST EDITED ON Nov-21-12 AT 11:14PM (MST)[p]
Just giving people an idea where to start looking. Seems like most of the sign I saw was right up in the snow, wich happened to be between 6000 and up. I dont think giving a specific drainage will do a lot of good. They are here today gone tomorrow. How many wolves have you killed or seen zigger? If you have nothing decent to say then go somewhere else.

Wolves sighted and confirmed on Double Springs pass, Burnt Creek, east and west fork, and the Pashimori river bottom near Donkey Hills.
They have moved back in. Fish and game took out two packs in 2010, but they have made there way back in.
Reports of no fawn crop, low elk numbers and high wolf sightings/scat/tracks have been reported.
The elk and deer are keeping close to populated areas due to the wolf pressure.

DREAMIN......NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE AREA, CAN YOU GIVE ME A DIRECTION FROM A TOWN WITH IN A MILE OR TWO ??? THANKS.....YD.

Its over by Goldburg, below Patterson and May. A topo map will show donkey hills and the road that runs along the Pashimori river bed heading south west towards the backside of Borah and Leatherman Peak. Mahogany Creek area some of my family cut fresh wolf tracks in the snow. Said they bumped the wolves off a herd of 4 deer that were heading out of the country fast.
The wolves are getting thick in there again and it shows by the lack of critters.
Last time they got out of control fish and game had to take out over 13 of them in 2010.
Wolves were also confirmed on the ranch below Borah next to the highway that runs between Mackay and Challis. I think they are using Pass Lake Trail to run both sides of the mountain.
Family said its the worst they have seen it since 2005-2010 when the wolves were thick.
I found 5 dead fawn carcasses this early August which confirms the reports of no fawn crop that anyone saw. All the Doe's were dry or lost fawns. Not alot of calfs either. A few smart cows moved their crews high in the open. Its the first time i have seen elk bed down out in the open and refuse to go into the brush and pines. But, they were so high and far back a person would be crazy to pack one out of that country.
The saddest thing i saw personally was the fact the Big Horns were lower than the elk by quite a bit. Elk above tree line in the cliffs and rocks and the sheep were down low in the pines.
Hope a bunch get killed up there cause they are doing alot of killing themselves.

This thread is great. I have been planning a wolf hunt in mid-January (around the 16th) with my brother and a couple friends. They are from Nevada and don't have the wolf problem YET. So they thought they would come up here and help with the problem. We haven't set a spot to go yet so anymore information on the best place to have the best chance at getting at least one, hopefully a couple would be greatly appreciated. You can PM me if you don't want it public. Again thanks to all that have posted spots to check out on here. I have a few spots to look into. Thanks again.

Any sightings around challis and mackay? Headed up next week to try to Put the hurt on them ?

I heard that a group of guys put the hurting on a few of the wolves running in this pack...

Saw three last weekend in Unit 45, in a location that I never suspected to see one, unreal... Will check out that area again soon, this time with a rifle on my pack!

LAST EDITED ON Feb-17-13 AT 09:52PM (MST)[p]2 wolves in the Ririe area northeast of Idaho falls also crossing hwy 26 into meadow creek .

Hiked about 4 miles up Sheep Creek off of the Middle Fork of the Boise River
last weekend. Saw TONS of sign...scat, tracks, clumps of hair where they had laid down

Talked to the guy who runs the little shop at Twin Springs and he said they are in the area thick.

This area is close to Boise...pretty good opportunity to get out there and try to kill one of these suckers!

Any recent wolf sightings in se Idaho I was going out tomorrow just looking for a good place to start.

Lots of wolf tracks from Twin Springs to Roaring river. They are there somewhere. 20+ miles of road with tracks on them. Elk are scattered from Cottonwood to Alexander flat. Good luck

Hunting wolves in eastern Idaho or Swan Valley would be tough.

There's only 2 packs that I'm aware of...one just east southeast of Idaho Falls and the other spends the summer mostly south of Victor along the WY border to Hoback. Not sure where that pack goes in the winter. There were some sightings last year around Ririe which might be them. I'm sure there are some lone wolves cruising around as well.

I'd probably stay on the Hwy (around palisades and pine crk pass) looking for tracks and glassing as much country as you could from the truck.

Also most of the area around Swan Valley, Ririe, and Palisades has NF winter closure until April 15th. That shuts down most all access points.

Muleys24seven where are you getting your info from?
I live here in this area you are describing and there are plenty of access points. You can snowmobile up fall creek road all you want and find the wolves hitting the elk on the upper end of Tex creek and across skyline ridge, down into Stukies property and over into Meadow creek. Ririe is open except for the winter range closure area behind the ski-hill and over to blacks canyon. Anything west of ski hill road is open as well and any private land you can get access to. Tex creek and Birch creek are open as well, Tex creek does close a few roads, but it is open to foot traffic in all areas. As for the wolves in victor area they winter right there in Pine creek pass. They chase the deer, moose and elk all over the place in that area. There are 4 wolf packs in this area right now. 1 in pine creek pass. 1 in Tex Creek. 1 roaming the area from Ririe Reservior and all the way over to Taylor mountain. The last one is in the Blackfoot reservoir area. These are the ones that have been seen by me and other guys out here. There is probably at least one more around Sheep creek near Palisades lake.
All these areas have open access points.

You better check a map again. Pretty much everything north of palisades creek, following the river all the way to the fish and game closure at heise is closed. High on pine creek pass is open but you need to go past west piney.

Yes, tex creek wma is open and some other blm/private but most of the lower NF ground around tex creek is closed. Skyline is open and area south of the road.

If your accessing the head of Indian fork and Dave's mountain from fall creek you are breaking the law.

"Muley..." makes a great point here that most people try to blow off with ignorance. ALWAYS have and understand the NF Travel map. BLM also has some closures but are well marked for those who car to adhere to the law. Those closures do have a purpose.

Besides the issue of travel restrictions on Public ground, I was utterly disappointed last week when I was wolf hunting and saw a truck driving all over a piece of Access Yes property that has a yellow sign clearly stating "Foot Traffic ONLY". Just beyond that were tracks of Snow Machine and Truck tracks all over the Area closed to all Activity. Sad that we could loose all access to those areas because of a few that do not care.

I'm staying just out of Irwin. Where is the closest area I can legally access to hunt wolves? As a side note, I have access to the river at our rental. What should I be using to fish the Snake around there right now? Since I have to be there and not in Montana, I'd like to do the same things I'd be doing here. Thanks guys, mtmuley

Mtmuley, I would get a Forest Service map to make sure you are legal...but to generally answer your question your closest areas with legal access would be the area south of Palisades Creek over into Sheep Creek, or up Pine Creek above where West Pine Creek (the drainage with the girls camp in it) comes in. You can snowmobile through Fall Creek but you can't get off the road until you get up towards Skyline. I'm not sure how long you will be in the area, but I will be over in Swan Valley next week. You can take a look at my map and I could maybe explain some of the areas better. Shoot me a PM if you want to meet up.

I've noticed a huge surge in wolf hunters taking to the hills. Which is awesome, but a new problem has developed. Howling in other hunters.

I howl to locate. And on the last trip we got a pack to answer a few miles away. We saw some other hunters heading the same direction. By the time we got there we never found the pack, and I don't think the other guys did either. Still not sure if we were calling each other in, or it was a legit pack of wolves.

So I was thinking we need to start a designated wolf hunters' radio channel. Maybe Lucky #7

If you hear howls, hop on the radio and ask if anyone is out there howling, so you don't end of chasing after howling hunters.

Or if you are hunting near other guys and spook a pack towards them, you could give them a heads up.

Just a thought, take it or leave it.

I totally agree with Yoyak on this one. Last few times I have been out I can hear howling all over the place and I can never tell if its wolves or humans. I will turn my radio on #7.

If we are going to take out some of these wolves we need to help each other out. THANKS

Found a fresh wolf kill here last week while out on a horse ride. I know they stay in this area a lot.
Its up by keps crossing.
look up these quardinents on Google maps

Saw a real big one yesterday crossing HWY 20 at Prairie Rd. Just north east of Mtn. Home. He looked to be about 180 lbs.
PB

Don't take offense, but is this a serious post? The 180lbs part makes me think you're just kidding around.
If serious, which direction was he headed? Solo wolf?

This is a serious post and perhaps you have not seen many wolves, I have, in excess of thirty. I have seen them as far away as 1 mile and as close as 50 feet. I can only estimate size as they relate to a large dog, say a mastiff or norweigian wolf hound which I have also been around. I have a home in Elk Bend and have had most of the sightings in unit 28. If you spend as much time in the woods as I do you might not doubt my sighting. This particular wolf was crossing HWY 20, I was heading south towards Mtn. Home and the wolf crossed right to left immediately in front of me within 25 yards.
PB

Also, see my post under "Wolf Help" , I explain more and direct others to where I have seen the wolves,
PB

First of all thanks for the lead, that's the whole reason why I started this post. I didn't mean to ruffle your feathers man, it's just that I've chased more BS wolf leads than I care to talk about. So I've learned to double check on the details of the lead before burning gas. Like you I've seen 30-40 wolves here in Idaho, and killed two them. The first one was 73lbs and the second was 85lbs. Any wolf over 100 lbs is a big one, and the largest the fish and game has documented was in the 130s. Which is why I immediately questioned the story. I understand what you mean by comparing to domestic dogs though. Have a good one man, thanks for the lead.
