Unit 67 elk

Hi, looking for some advice on unit 67. There are 4 of us planning to hunt the general elk rifle season. We are planning to bring horses and are not afraid to put a few miles on our boots. I was wondering if someone could help point us in the right general direction. Not looking for someone's secret spot. Just would like to avoid the busier areas. On a side note I could offer access to some whitetails in iowa if anyone would be interested in a hunt swap of sorts. Thanks!

I would think twice about 67. very few spots with water in 67 for the horses where the elk will be. and those spots have guides camped there already. 67 general elk isn't called the 7 day war for nothing. I live in unit 67 and don't hunt elk there if that tells you anything.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-11-16 AT 02:39PM (MST)[p]Unit 67 is not an easy hunt, for either bulls or cows, but it is not impossible either. We have killed some tremendous trophies in there. The bulls that are killed are typically older in age and better 6-pts than across the river in 66/69. You will be in there with 600-800 others, most for the whole short season.

Look at the 10 year elk plan on the website, and the harvest statistics for yourself there, and compare to some of the other areas. What type of hunt are you expecting, and will be happy if 3 of you go home empty-handed? The numbers don't lie. Take a look at a map or on Google Earth. There are plenty of ugly nasty holes back in Burns, Blacks, Coal Mine, or Jensen canyons or you could ride every day on Garns or Piney Peak.

Get on the Hunt Planner and map feature, and just keep zooming in on the unit and you will see how much country there really is there. the biggest limitation is trailhead access points. Heck, you could go back between Thompson and Fourth of July Peaks on the south side of the unit and may not see anyone for days either.

Good luck whatever you do!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's a picture of a Unit 67 bull last year that made it through the war. They don't all get killed as youngsters! :)

Read Blank's post and suggestions.
Any of those areas on horseback would be a fun adventure. Very good suggestions.
