Unit 54 Archery Deer

As I await the Nevada deer draw I am considering a black up plan for 54 archery deer in Sept. I know there has to be good bucks if you work hard to find them. Some general questions on the unit. Is there a good amount of roadless country? I will be coming from CA and possibly with two of my buddies. I see that this unit starts at the end of august, unlike other archery units in ID that start at the middle of Aug. When do the bucks typically shed their velvet in this unit? Is there an advantage to hunting later in Sept? I would prefer to hunt these bucks in the velvet as would most archery hunters. I may be able to do one scouting trip for 3-4 days prior to the hunt, realistically, no more than that. The thing I like about this hunt is it is unlimited (at least for now) and we could spend the next 4-5 years getting to know the unit. It's not that much further than the Ruby's in NV that we have been hunting the last 3-4 years. Whats the country like? High desert? Whats the pressure like during the archery season? I understand there may be elk hunts going on (LE bulls and possibly cow hunts). What other pressure would be coming from other hunters? Speed goats? Outfitters camps? Assuming we would just set up a road side camp, possibly in the NF - is this a possibility? Anything would be great for now, just starting in on the research for this one. Thanks, -t

The terrain is not near as steep as the Rubys. You can hunt from the truck or atv. I'm real down on the genetics of the Rubys.

Thanks. Thats why I didnt ask about the quality of deer in 54, I knew it was an upgrade from the Ruby's (not saying you can't find a giant from time to time but they are rare). One thing in the Ruby's is you see a ton of deer up high, around 9k feet... In 54, are the deer densities mostly found in the upper elevations?

Be prepared for a lot of people.
The unit is very close to Twin Falls and the obvious fall back for everyone who doesn't get a draw tag.
I hunted it for elk and did not realize how many people not only hunt it in archery deer season but just go there to recreate on the weekends with 4 wheelers, side by sides or just camping out.

With the season starting Aug 30th, finding a buck in velvet will be tougher as each day goes by. Are the deer down low just as much as up high? Up high might be tougher to keep eyes on these deer if there is more timber.
