Nonresident Youth

Hello all. I plan on taking my two kids (ages 10 and 11) to Idaho for their first big game hunt this year. We plan on hunting the general units on the border with Wyoming. I've read the regulations regarding the youth mentored hunts, but still have questions. As I understand it they will both need nonresident youth hunting licenses as well as deer tags. And I will also need a hunting license as well as a deer tag. My question is, are these able to be purchased on the game and fish website? Or do we need to purchase over the counter from a vendor? Thanks for any help anyone might be able to offer.

You are correct understanding the requirement to have a license and tag for them and yourself. When hunting, you need to be by them as their mentor. It's part of the deal to get their tags at the resident price. You just need to have a tag for the same SPECIES...not necessarily for the same time.

Example 1: I have an archery elk tag. If my kid draws a controlled rifle hunt, she gets to buy it at the resident price and I can legally take her because I have an elk tag even though my tag isn't valid at the same time.

Example 2: My kid wants to bear hunt...but I don't. To do it inexpensively, I can buy a reduced price bear hunt for a unit way up north for $40...then buy her the bear tag for the resident price to hunt where we want. That's the only way it'd be legal...and I don't have to drop $186 for my tag in order to take her.
