LAST EDITED ON Aug-10-16 AT 01:39PM (MST)[p]Tired of hunting Utah.

Took a chance on drawing an Idaho controlled hunt.....didnt.

So, bought an Idaho general season 76 tag. Looks like beautiful country. But I see ROADS EVERYWHERE! I like to ride my horses in and get away from the crowds. My brother will be with me....we are in our thirties. This is our first hunt in Idaho. I have no idea what to expect on 10/10/16 opening day. I usually get up high. I can see some peaks that look like you can get away from the crowds. My brother has been in med school for 13 years and is finally out! I want his first out of state hunt to be decent. So, if a couple of you fine gentlemen wouldnt mind helping us out with just some basic info it would be much appreciated. If it is sensitive info just send me a PM thanks....

a. Is there a lot of other hunters? Looks like it
b. Can I get away from the pressure by getting away from the roads and trails or are the people here hard core like in G in Wyoming?
c. Are there bucks? Looks like a 45% success rate so I assume I might find a 4 point.
d. good unit to take my 13 year old son on for his first buck....he would be happy with a 2 point
e. Do they close down the roads for 4 wheelers....does anyone really follow the rule? I hope so because I like to get away from the crowds and hunt some steep country.
f. Anything else would be much appreciated.....

Daxter and gb22 and others used to have some great advice on here....not sure if they are still around....thanks again!

yes there is roads everywhere and during the hunt there is people driving on all of them, four-wheelers are not permitted on any road that a full size vehicle can not drive on. anything that says trail they are not supposed to be on, but you will find that people do not care about that and they drive on them any way. I have turned multiple people in every year,it gets really frustrating.

you also have to remember that they have the rifle bull hunt that starts I think on oct 15 and that adds another 300 hunters. besides that it is a decent hunt and you have a good chance at seeing a bear also. I would definitely stay away from the main roads as you will see they are packed with campers and wall tents. there are a few good bucks that I see taken in that unit every year so they are there somewhere.

if you want pm me and I could give you a few spots that you could check out on google maps see if it is what you are looking for.

There are places you can ride in a ways and get away from most of the crazy crowds of road hunters. But you definitely won't get away from everyone.

If you put in some time behind the glass you will have no problem finding a way hanger!

Good luck!!

Thanks guys. I will PM a few of you to ask about some areas. I am headed up there with my son to hike and scout. We are looking forward to getting away.

I will definitely try to get one before the elk hunters hit on the 15th. That was a great point.

Glad I could give ya a laugh :) You would be surprised how far people will go. One year on the Wasatch Front I had the place to myself. Then next year we had 42 hunters....4 miles into the backcountry....with 3000 feet vertical....up a crazy trail on the edge of a cliff with little to no water available....so just cuz you leave the road doesnt mean there wont be people.

I really like the area and hope to make it my go to spot in the future. Thanks again guys.

I am not sure what to think.

Deer in 76 are not in the toilet. I just got back. Had a great time. They guys who helped me will get a trip report, pics, and a report on exact animals and locations. I will PM them.

To those who helped instead of just sitting there....Thanks.

To those who didnt. Well....you dont get any info out of me either.

Always love this attitude from people, most people that don't help on a forum are not helping because they have no info to share, I have never hunted 76 so couldn't have helped if I'd wanted and would like to see a pic or 2 of your success and maybe hear a story after all that is why most of us are on forums like these

I have hunted 76 and worked cattle in the unit for 25 years. Last year I saw fewer deer than the past 10 years. Winter was hard on the deer. We will see what happens for next year. Not to optimistic.

I also hunt the Wasatch. If that was a bad year then on your bad years you guys make the Wasatch look sooo bad.

OTC Idaho. Shhhhhhh

We don't need your photos or information if we already know what 76 can produce. For every hunter that joins the crowd the area gets a little worse.

Aspen, I am sure you are a good dude but I struggle a little by the "I won't show you a picture thing " you threw out there. It is fine if you don't post them up but you basically called out 95% of the dudes on this site because you didnt get what you wanted. Take your ball and go home! I am sure the rest of us that hunt 76 will be fine not seeing your adventures.

Just traded pics and stories with the 5 or 6 guys I hunted by or that helped me on here. You know who you guys are.

Thanks for reaching out to me to help a guy out.

Those of you who didnt want to help

Well...

I think its funny when a guy gets on here and asks for help, and then turns out to be a prick. not everybody could help you out, not everybody knows that unit. typical utahn, your the kind that give the out of state guys the bad rap. you cant hunt in your own state, so you ask for help in another state and when you get what you want you turn into an a@@, it will catch up with you. next time you need help I hope people see this and see what kind of guy you are!

Whats wrong with rewarding the people that step up and offer help?

If these guys offer help shouldnt they get something in return?

The least I can do is offer them a report on the trip.

You know who you are....thanks guys!

The rest of us could at least see a picture and a short write up or something. We don't need details on what basin you killed in or anything like that. Most of us are on forums like these to share in each other's success, besides the informational value. You seem to think that everybody should have stopped what they were doing and run out to scout unit 76 to find aspenadventures a buck. Whatever done wasting time on you

I'm willing to bet that Asspen didn't kill anything. If he did it was a 2 point. Thing is Asspen, you coming back into this forum and acting like a 12 year old is sad. I doubt you'll get any more help. Keep your pics and keep out of Idaho.

Hey, just sayin that I appreciate the guys that take the time to respond and help.

I reward them with pics and a story.

Dont get your feelings hurt cuz ya didnt get to see my pics or my story.

Right, didnt get anything....keep believing that.

And stay out of Idaho....na....already have my OTC tag. Thanks!
