I have the November buck tag, and have done some scouting but I have never been in the unit in November. If anyone has any general thoughts on the hunt and migration it would be appreciated. Can swap back info on Southcentral/SE Idaho hunts if it helps. Thanks in advance.

Lance,

I'm not an expert on unit 40....but I have some maps.

Depending on when you're going out, if you could use an extra set of binos or spotting scope, I'd come help ya' look for 'em.

Within the shadows, go quietly.

Advice.

Bring chains and a shovel if rain/snow is in forecast.

I've not hunted it late for bucks, but I think given the big fire last year, the weather you will have between now and 11/15, google earth, and some logic will do a lot to point you toward deer. These deer won't need to migrate 30 miles like some central Idaho units. Rut hunts are simply about finding the masses of does.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-27-16 AT 10:51AM (MST)[p]Also have 40. Headed up for the entire first week and then will play it by ear for the rest of the hunt based on what I'm seeing or if I have decided to shoot anything yet.

Drove up there this summer to get familiar with the terrain and saw a really nice buck. But with all the lazy forkie road hunters during the 2 pt hunt he wont be anywhere around anymore

Well me being one of those. Although I did get off and climb some rough terrain as well. We saw several "big" bucks on the 2nd to last day of the regular season up there, that we couldn't shoot as WE didn't get the draw for the Nov hunt. Id tell you where I saw them but apparently I'm not worthy as I'm one of the "lazy forkie road hunters during the 2 pt hunt" lol im kidding really good luck.

Saw 50 does or so but no bucks. Almost every canyon has does. Near silver city. Would you try higher for bucks or lower like Jordan valley? Obviously bucks aren't with does thick yet

If you aren't seeing bucks yet with big groups of does then you should be looking in the trees or rocks within a half mile of that area.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-01-16 AT 08:20PM (MST)[p]Thanks we covered quite a bit of ground. Probably got up near 65 does by evening. Finally saw one buck just a forkie. Will hit rocks more tomorrow

If you have time to wait them out, they will show up. Keep working new areas but also keep checking back on those does.

Ended up finding more bucks eventually. Mostly smaller herd bucks 8 total. Over 150 does. Couple 4 pts, a 3x4, and some forkies. My buddy who hasn't hunted as long ended up taking one of the 4 pts. I'm going to re game plan and hit it as much as I can over next two weeks.

Assuming some colder weather and or snow would help. We thought they might be higher and eventually moved to south mountain and Indian meadows. Couldn't find much up there. A few recent monster buck tracks so some big boys are up there, but as big ones are they are hard to find.
Saw two massive thick 7pt bulls up there broadside at 150 after hiking back in ways.

What's the migration pattern up there?? From reading online I've heard conflicting info. Someone told me those bucks come up from Nevada. But I'd assume more they just migrate down from the tops of south mtn, silver city, etc into lower areas like mudflat, juniper ridge road, and eventually make it to 41 and 42?

I have 40 also. Spent a lot of time between silver city and Reynolds. Saw a couple nice bucks but they were on private of course. I've never seen so many does in an area. From everyone I've talked to they say don't get burnt out to early. It would be nice to have some colder weather. Good luck
