So we pack in 2 days before the opening day of general deer season. we went in about 9-10 miles. got in and no one else was there yet. Sunday a couple guys roll in late and set up camp near us! ok....so sunday evening we put two bucks to bed and head back to camp. as we are headed back to camp we find those two guys below where we had been glassing by about 1/4 mile looking the other direction. we decide to make sure we get to where we put those deer to bed and wake up at 4:45 am and hustle up there. we are glassing at first light. at about 7:30 those two idiots show up while I'm taking a piss. me and my buddy nod at them with no response from them. THEN those SOB's walk over 71 yard and start glassing the same drainage we were glassing!!!!! I almost lost my #####! about the time we decided to go confront them they get up and leave. talk about pieces of #####! 71 YARDS AWAY!!!! we end up getting a nice 161" buck and when we get back to the trailhead there are 2 trucks. one is Washington and 1 is Idaho. I so wanted to leave a note but didn't know which truck was theirs.

I would have left a note on both trucks....saying....if you were the a$$holes that....then rip'm a new one....

"Rip um a new one". For what!? Sounds like the other guys busted their ass also hiking in 9-10 miles. They Probably weren't expecting anyone else to be up there as well. They were probably also bummed that someone else had the same idea as them. When they walked up to you. They glassed a few minutes then left. It doesn't sound like they affected your hunt. Sounds like you got a really nice buck. I don't see the need for aggression. It's public land. We all share it. Congrats on the deer.

I agree about the public land thing and everyone has a right to be there, but that is kind of inconsiderate to sit down and glass 70 yards away from other hunters particularly when you walked 9 miles in. That's just weird. I mean for Hell sakes you might as well just sit down right next to them if you're going to do that. Very irritating, but not worth making a scene over. Is what it is.

I get the public land argument, and ultimately it is the winning argument IMHO.

But I have also been the first to a bowl to glass and had people show up late and sit right next to me. It is super frustrating.

I've also been the guy that was beat to the ridge, IMO the right call is to admit you were beat and head to the next ridge.

Last year we backpacked in after a 200" typical in an OTC unit and there were three other guys there. We met up with them on the mountain the night before the hunt and each agreed to hunt separate parts of the mountain. Luckily they were cool guys and it worked out for everybody.

A few years ago I shot a 184" buck with a bow in an OTC area after somebody beat me to my spot and I was forced to a new area. Sometimes it is a blessing in disguise.

Congrats on the buck.

I know right! At least be polite and respond to a head nod or something. It is public land and I don't hold ill will towards someone else being in the area but the 70 fricking yards away and glassing the same basin is ridiculous! I've been beat before too and ya it's frustrating but that's what you have plan B for right!

That is a crappy situation. At least they didn't start walking through the area you were glassing. Let's see a pic of that 161"

you know it takes all kinds this is like when you are fishing on a lake and it's a huge lake so you go to the far side so you will have a spot to yourself and then some idiot comes up and sits down right next to you.
Given it is a huge lake and public but out of common respect give some people some room.
That's is when my casting seems to be bad, for some reason I keep crossing the other guys line and getting tangled up with him. Sooner or later he will pick up and move so I won't keep crossing him when I cast.
Too bad you can't so something easy like that to get them out.

I would have left notes on both trucks to make sure I got the note to the right idiot, just saying

Those 2 guys are probably telling the same story to others but you're the bad guy in his story. Its public land hunting so that's just the way it is. Sounds like it didn't affect your hunt so it all worked out good. I'm just glad we still have the opportunity to hunt every year. Take advantage of that while we still can.

Well its public land, what can ya do. It could have been worse at least they didn't go busting deer or skylining themselves.

A couple years ago my wife and I were parked at a glassing point waiting for light to walk out. Public land 20 miles in every direction. 2 ATV's pull up behind us and park, guys build a fire whole nine yards. I asked them What up and they flat out said we're going out to that point and glass, its public land. 2 on 1 what can ya do?
