Well I decided to give Idaho a try this next season because my son can hunt at 10. More than likely we will be hunting an OTC tag unless I put in for unit 73 which I have access to private property.

My main question is should I focus on a deer or elk OTC tag. I really don't care about the size of the animal just want to give him a good opportunity and a good experience. Willing to hunt hard and get off the roads. I know with the winter that the deer herds have taken a beating.

Again not looking for units just what would probably be the best opportunity. Deer or elk

Any help would be appreciated. planning on doing a scouting trip or two either way

Thanks

Deer success rates are normally so much higher. That should easily hold true even with deer getting hit hard. There are just way more deer, they are more out in the open, they are generally less wary, and they live at lower elevations in many cases.

With a 10-year-old, it will be much easier to pack out a deer as well. He will just want to be hunting and see/shoot animals, I would I imagine.
