Moose Tag

Hey guys! A friend drew a bull moose tag for the #3009 hunt from 9/15-12/1 in unit 2 up in the northwest corner of Idaho north of I-90. I'd appreciate any information that anyone might have on the area, when to plan the hunt, etc. He may go guided, but my buddy and I are trying to talk him into letting us help him on a DIY hunt.

Where would you guys be traveling from and can you hunt two or more times if needed or is it everything at once.

The guy that has the tag is in Ohio. John lives in Sheridan, Wyoming and I'll be out there with him all of September and October. Sheridan is about ten hours from the hunt area and I would imagine it will be just one hunt lasting up to two weeks depending on how long Gary can hunt since he lives so far away.

Late Sept/early Oct is the rut. That's probably your best bet. Find drainages with clear cuts (Google maps, or I use IDFG interactive maps). My wife had 8A a few years back and got a 39 3/4" bull.

That's exactly what John and figured based on the two bulls we got him in Idaho in 2007 and in Wyoming in 2015 when the drew his tags.

We hunted mid October and got bull moose, 6x1 bull elk, and 4x3 mule deer. Moose we're still rutting good.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-25-17 AT 07:01PM (MST)[p]Another spot I've seen lots is Hoodoo Mountain and North to Priest River on lots of logging roads in that area. It's been a few years since I've been there but always saw good numbers of moose.

I think spirit lake is in unit 2? If it is get a IEP permit and head in towards the WA line and mt Spokane .. Lotta great country back there to glass.

Take heed, this is all good and legit info from all replying. I live in 2. Don't need a guide. But you should go by every persons reply here.
Time and places have been covered. If you can't find them, then golf might be a better hobby.
Good luck.

Thanks everyone! You guys are great and it looks like a DIY is on the menu and I think we'll be able to get Gary a nice bull with all your help!

Like has been stated, the rut is the best time to go. I killed mine October 2nd 2007,and it came on a string. I just mimicked a cow elk and it worked great. And you really don't need a guide, just locate a cow,and you'll find a bull. The kill in 2016 was over 90 % with a 37.5 average. Mine was right at 45 inches, and my son-in-laws was 34.You might want to have a wolf tag,and a whitetail tag too.
