Beaverhead Elk Limited Bull Tag

Well Idaho finally decided to give me a good tag! I drew the Late Season (Nov 1-Nov 30) tag in units 58, 59, and 59a. I hunted deer out there last year and saw a couple decent bulls, but other than that, I don't have much experience hunting out there. If anybody would be willing to help point me in the right direction of finding a good mature bull, I'd really appreciate it! I'll be putting out some trail cams out there in August, so I'd like to have a few areas narrowed down. Feel free to PM me if that works best. I'm always willing to help you out with areas I know a little better too. Thanks guys!

Be prepared for all weather conditions. I had that tag years ago and the went out the day before the opener and the camper froze all up that night causing us to call it and have to head home for the wall tent.

Look in the timber, and on the edges of openings, when you find herds of tons of cows the bulls are prob in the same canyon somewhere so keep your eyes open, ive chased alot of elk in that country and love it up there.

I drew that tag a couple of years ago, passed on lots of small bulls and ended up eating the tag, there are some good bulls in there, my experience was the big bulls had left the herds by November.

Jarom974 and 7mmgilbert, I appreciate your guys' suggestions. It's going to be an interesting hunt that's for sure. I'm really looking forward to it though. Hoping to pull a nice bull out of there. I'll keep you all updated!

RE: Beaverhead Elk Limited Bull Tag---Moose

Drew a Moose tag for 59/59a , the area is new to me and looking forward to getting up there, any tips on where would be the best entry points to the areas would be great or open to any other advice, Thanks in advance, Frank

RE: Beaverhead Elk Limited Bull Tag---Moose

For moose I would focus my vacation time mostly the last two weeks of September and first two weeks of October. Stop and talk to the archery hunters you see in September and there would likely be a some that would tell you about moose that they have seen. The first 9 days of October won't have as many hunters but once the deer rifle hunt opens it would pay to talk to other hunters. I've seen moose high and low in those units but in general I tend to see moose in eastern Idaho in areas that are within 1/2 mile of water.

For November elk hunt I think the advice of preparing for any weather is a very good idea. If you get a good snowstorm or two, it could limit what roads you can drive. You could also get very little snow and still have many bulls hanging out at higher elevations at the end of November. Bulls that you find while scouting between now and mid October will likely be in a different area by the time your hunt opens. Scouting early will give you the chance to learn new country and give you a general idea about the size of the bulls available. Unless you are an experienced elk hunter AND can put in considerable time into this hunt I think it would be a mistake to pass on a 300? bull on this hunt. I know guys that are experienced elk hunters that kill rag horns on this hunt and are happy to tag them. Good luck.

Thanks Brian, I had planned on heading up towards the end of September, hoping we get a little wet weather before then so the ground isn't too dry. Probably head out from Spencer. In the mean time I'll have to practice my moose calls...Happy hunting my friend!

RE: Beaverhead Elk Limited Bull Tag---Moose

I have not seen any large moose this year but saw a fair sized one on Indian Creek in July and in early June saw what one that had potential up Webber Creek. Spencer area has moose and is a great place to start.

RE: Beaverhead Elk Limited Bull Tag---Moose

I'm not too concerned about size, I'll probably have fun even pulling out a fair sized bull. Are Indian creek and Webber creek both in the 59/59a? Been looking on the web working on my bull call as I guess moose rut starts around the end of Sept. Looking forward to getting up there. I've got a small trailer I'll probably bring up and hit one of the campgrounds. Thanks for the tips! Frank
