A friend and I are picking up otc elks tags to hunt during the rifle hunt. I know it was quite the winter out there. We were considering getting mulie tags as well. Those of you who have been in the area this spring, have you seen much for mule deer or was the winter pretty hard on them? We are not big trophy hunters, any mature buck would be a trophy to us.

Very very low deer densities in 67. Also the rifle elk hunt is called "the 7 day war" for a reason..

A giant buck could show up for sure.

very low elk densities as well. was out hiking in my normal deer/elk areas and didn't see a single deer or elk.

Thanks for all the input. We may just stick with our elk tags and see if we can have any luck. It will be awesome country either way. Can't wait.

I would just concentrate on the elk hunt. There are some good local bucks, but difficult to hunt the same time as elk. Good numbers of mule deer will not be in the area until after the general season closes. That said, keep in mind that a non-resident deer or elk tag can be used on a bear, lion, or wolf, and seasons will be open during your hunt. That is a value decision for you guys to make! :)

LAST EDITED ON Sep-25-17 AT 11:35AM (MST)[p]Id buy the deer tags.. you never know.. the winter was hard on the fawns.. 90% of the adults survived in our neck of the woods... id buy them..

I agree it would be beneficial to a have a tag in your pocket. There's always a chance at a great buck the deer are few and far between but the genetics are there for a great one. And if you see one of these other creatures it would be nice to smoke one. Good luck. Happy hunting.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-26-17 AT 11:31AM (MST)[p]Thanks again for everyone's thoughts. Looks like a decent amount of precip. out that way from forecasts etc. Is it looking like there may be more snow in the higher country during rifle season than normal this year?
