Hey guys I managed to get my daughter a controlled 55 buck tag this year. I have never set foot in this unit. She is 12 and looking for her first deer. Really wants a 4 point like her brother. Any info that could help us would be appreciated. Not looking for honey holes just general areas- I'll take honey holes if you want. Thank you in advance.

Well there's deer all over that unit. Opening day is usually a free for all unless you found a secret spot. I would say try one of the the two largest mountains. Independence or Pomerelle. There's roads or trails to the top. Places like the Cottrells or Jim Sage might be harder to hunt or find deer.
Try approaching other hunters too who might be holding out for something bigger and wouldn't mind helping out your daughter. Best of luck.

Most of middle Mt. is public
But the access goes through private
Better know the landowners
Miners or ranchers

yeah don't know any landowners in the unit so that will be tough. Guess we will be just driving around and sight seeing for a while

LAST EDITED ON Oct-05-17 AT 09:35AM (MST)[p]You don't need to know landowners to hunt unit 55, unless you are set on hunting middle mountain. otherwise access to great deer hunting is dang good in that unit.

Don't just drive around sightseeing. However if you do you have a decent chance at a buck off the road. Go to the unit a day early and look around, you will be surprised at the number of deer.

Every canyon has deer. Geez we had bucks walking thru our camp this summer.

However, if you are waiting for someone to tell you exactly where to go or send you a phone number for a private ranch that needs a hunter you are going to be out of luck.

If I had the tag I would hunt between Elba and the top of the pass to Oakley. Or go to the radio tower above Pomerelle and hunt either side down the mountain.

Thank you for the info. Yes I got some time off and will be heading up Saturday and Sunday. We will cover some ground and put our time in for sure. I will keep you posted

We got to only hunt on Sat morning. Saw 5-7 bucks. One real good buck but he was on the other side of a private fence from where we have been hunting. We have some problems so we had to leave early. We will be back the end of the month.

How did your season end?

LAST EDITED ON Jan-25-18 AT 03:56PM (MST)[p]My daughters first hunt. We had a great time. Not the biggest buck but she made a great shot at 440 yards. Super fun and thanks to everyone on the page for the imput and help.
