Recommendations north of Spencer

I am going to be taking my 13 year old son hunting north of Spencer next week. We have hunted hard for 3 years in southern Idaho and haven't been able to seal the deal on a deer for him yet. Due to certain constraints we have, we will be traveling through this area on Thursday and this will be our only chance to fill his tag this year. Would someone be willing to point us in the right direction in that area? He would be ecstatic with a buck of any size, or even very happy with a nice doe.

I have driven I-15 through there 1000 times, but never stopped, so I only know the area generally. I am really good with maps and Google Earth, so if you can point me in the right direction, I can find a spot.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

North of Spencer is generally thought to be the Dairy Crk and Porqupine Pass area. Not my first recommendation for deer, but pretty good elk country. I took my wife riding in the UTV in August east of Spencer, in the Three Mile/Dry Crk/Rattlesnake area and we saw quite a few deer. Most from the road, but there are lots of gated logging roads to hike also. Some pretty good whitetails are taken from the creek bottoms also. Good luck.

Turn at humphries and drive back into the modoc creeks / Paul reservoir area. Or turn west at dubois and you can access tons of deer country up the medicine lodge and crooked cr drainages.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-17-17 AT 11:56PM (MST)[p]Thanks for the help guys! We are going to try the Modoc Rd/Paul Reservoir area first. If we aren't finding anything we'll try the Three Mile/Dry Crk/Rattlesnake/area.

Thanks again for the suggestions.
We hunted hard for two days and logged a lot of miles in our boots and one morning in the truck. We saw one group of very spooky muleys early one morning from the truck but they were gone long before we had a chance. All the miles and vertical feet in our boots yielded ZERO deer sightings. There were a few road kills on the highway, so I know there are deer in the area, but we sure couldn't find them. It was a little disappointing. Despite the lack of deer it was still an awesome time with my son.

Good luck to all,

Thanks for letting us know how it went!

The Modoc area is weird. We used to hunt archery in there and would see lots of deer. By the time rifle season opened on Oct 10 they were hard to find. Then by the middle to end of the season we would see zero deer in several days of hunting and lots of miles covered. They just disappear. We had elk tags last November and rode horses all over that country. Saw lots of elk and not one single deer. A little late now, but I would not spend one minute hunting deer in Modoc Creek. We still have luck towards Medicine lodge later in the month.
