Hey guys

Looking for some advice for the Mccall Zone A tag short range cow season. Unfortunately, I couldn't capitalize on the opportunity with my bow and missed a couple of bulls this past September. I would like to get a cow in the freezer and the tag isn't valid where I archery hunt and know the elk herds in unit 25. I would imagine the elk in the drainages around Warm Lake head down towards Cascade in unit 24 for the winter? I'm kicking my feet in the sand here looking at maps with all of the roads around where I would expect elk to move towards to migrate. The private property down low also has me concerned. I would appreciate any help as to where the elk tend to be once the snow hits like it did this last weekend. What elevation do they tend to winter? Do they feed at the valley floor and move up to bed? I am heading up there Saturday to scout around all day and look for tracks to give me an idea of where they might be; and to plan a couple of longer trips in the following weeks. I would be willing to share some advice about archery hunting the area in return.

Thanks
Jayden

Lots of that lower ground in the McCall zone was purchased by the Wilks group. Idaho Fish and Game's interactive map site has a good detail of where all of that land is.

I'm not one to complain because I can't find game. Buddy came up to do our usual 39 buck/bull hunt, but he waited to long to buy NR any deer tag and so we bought McCall tags to take advantage of our new cabin in Cascade. I'd been scouting some land E of the lake for a few years for possible elk hunting later. In the last two month the Wilks Bros group went in and absolutely painted those hills orange.

We never found elk, except was small group's tracks. I talked to a great guy who grew up there. Seemed like a real hard hunter and he said the amount of elk in the valley is very small right now. He and his family hunt the wilderness. He had killed a very nice bull, so I believed what he said.

So, good luck on any chance to fill that tag. I have no doubt others are better hunters than me. I won't be buying that tag again. Killing me that my usual hunting buddies are all filling their tags where I would usually have gone. Oh, well, live and learn. At least I still have some elk in the freezer.

Shoot. Thats disappointing to hear. Sounds like I may need to hope the elk stay higher and stay in public. Should be an interesting hunt for sure.
Also, if you are still up there and have the bull tag BPK PM me and i can give you a couple spots to check out in 25.

Nevermind, just saw it closed on the 3rd.

I do really appreciate that offer, even if it came late. Maybe when I get closer to retirement I'll focus on this country, but next year I'll be back in 39. At least I can find elk in that zoo.

Hear ya there. Saw 5 bulls this season in 39 during the rifle season. Didnt have the tag but tried to get my brother on his first elk. Unfortunately we couldn't close the deal but there were A LOT of elk this year.
