Have you checked with the Forest Service? Most forests don't allow unattended camps longer than 24 hours. It may have been seized.

Thank you for the information. Camp was set up on BLM lands however, tomorrow when offices open we'll be contacting IDFG, BLM to file a report.

That's an awful long time to leave a camp unattended. It was mentioned above, but I know the FS only allows 14 days for a camp to be set up. Maybe the BLM has the same criteria.

Any luck on finding your tent? Were you set up close to a road or way back? I can't believe what people are willing to do. Any luck hunting?

I just returned from our Elk Hunt. Apologies for not updating any sooner. Actually, a Rancher took our camp upon permission given by the County Sheriff, which is against the law.

The BLM Officer was incredibly helpful in getting our gear back and stated that although they do have a 14-day camp rule, it is rarely enforced, especially during hunting season.

Thank you to all who assisted with a lot of useful leads and information.

I would think if it was set up on private property the sheriff might let the landowner take it down and when the tent owner calls to file a complaint the sheriff would know where to find the tent. Maybe you accidentally set it up on private property. Lots of ranchers don't post it or lock gates.

I don't think a "rancher" would have taken your camp unless it was on "his" property!
Then....that would be completely legal for the Sheriff to authorize the removal.
I'm surprised you got the camp back without difficulty. Seems you should have been fined for trespassing if indeed the camp was on private property.
Either way, setting up a camp with the intention of coveting the adjacent land and driving others from the location is low class if your intent was to hunt "public" land.

So did you learn anything? People who occupy public land by putting their trailer/tent/camp on it for long periods of time when they aren't there stink.

Embarrassing mess, right here.

This guy was lucky to get anything back, squatters who take advantage of the system or outright tresspass (Its not obvious what this guy did with his *poof* disappearing act here) should feel the bite...
