Hey Guys and Gals,

Looking for some direction on the youth hunt opportunities. I have a 10 year old that wants to hunt big game in the worst way. I know that we can and we will be at least getting him a general season deer tag next year. Checking to see if there are any good, high opportunity hunts we should check out?

Unit 39 always was good to me as a kid. I shot a doe most years hunting only one morning. I was busy with sports so we didn't have much hunting time. I didn't care if the deer had horns--I was on cloud 9.

Pick a unit with high deer numbers and either sex hunting IMO.

Both my daughters got controlled hunts first go around older one drew 41 and youngest drew the 11a junior tag. Both had great hunts and harvested 4pts. Idaho is youth friendly most units have either sex options for kids. Older daughter got first elk on depredation hunt. Then they both tagged out on 36a juniors cow permit couple years ago good hunt long season winter ranges are kid friendly. Between kids and old man I try to get them the best tags and try not to hunt with them. You can only prepare a 10 year old so much, best results when you leave gun at home and focus on guide skills! If for some odd reason he wants a big one look at the juniors tags for 47&54 quality but your running concurrently with controlled hunt with everyone else. If you pick a unit with extra doe tags you can also set yourself up for a sure thing doe and buck option on same hunt. Mostly whitetail!

Lot's of opportunity, but preparing a 10 year old is key.

A bad experience can be detrimental at that age. I think shooting skills, particularly in the field with adrenaline running, including yours, can lead to bad experiences.

I highly recommend a .243, 257 bob, etc max. No .270, no light guns that enhance recoil, etc.

Nice thing about WT's up north, not only are there a lot of them, but usually the shots are under 100yds, which is what a 10 yr old's limit should be. Good clean kills are important. Lot's of Fed, State, and Timber company lands up there.
