Well after all the F&G drama I drew a tag. I've put in for this unit both fall and spring for 13 years and finally got lucky. Now It's time to figure it out. Anybody know about the snow pack on that side of the state or any thoughts on when I should head over. Should be a fun time, super fired up about it.

I've hunted this tag myself and with quite a few other lucky hunters, it's a blast! Your in for a good time. I know it's hard not to race up there for opening day, but I wouldn't waste a trip until at least the 1st of May. I've seen a couple bears in April but thed earliest we have shot one is the 8th of May. The hunting just keeps getting better as it gets closer to the end. Congrats on the tag and have a good time!

This echoes my experience in neighboring units. Seems like visuals go from 1 or 2 a day and that number triples after that magical May 1st mark.

I know guys worry about rubbed coats, but I've seen some good looking hides late into May and early June.

I have hunted it a couple times when my son drew the tag and then I finally drew one. The advice you are hearing from my experience is spot on.
Although my son killed a giant on April 2 with his tag. 20 4/8 skull official and 7?2? base of tail to nose. I found it better later.
The absolute most important advice is to be patient and use your glass.
A big bear looks like a hippo- low to the ground. The ears will be much wider spaced than the young bears!
I still try every year to draw it.
Be patient and have a ball! You are at the zoo. Practice shooting a lot out to 300 yds. Evening hunting was better than mornings for activity. Good luck!

Time for an update!! We had a great hunt. Just got back. The weather was perfect the mountains beautiful with all the wild flowers green grass and the smell of wild onions! We went over on Sunday and hit it hard for three days. Put lots of miles on the Rhino and did a ton of glassing. We were able to turn up 8 bears and I got the opportunity to put one down. He?s not the biggest on the mountain but the biggest I've killed. We spotted him and watched for a while trying to decide if I should shoot him or not and then he went into the trees. As we sat there debating I told my buddy If he comes out again I'll give it a go. So my friend busted out his coyote call and started calling and wouldn't you know the bear came right back out! I put the cross hairs right behind the shoulder pulled the trigger and it was lights out!
