How's it going everyone my name is Jake I've been planning a Idaho deer hunt for the past few years now and finally decided to make it happen this year. I'm planning on a 10 day hunt. Mainly packing in and staying in the same area for a few days then hiking out and moving to new country until I find a good quantity of deer. I had a few questions for everyone who's seasoned with Idaho. Would you recommend hunting from opening day for 10 days or hunting the last 10 days? I'll be in southeast Idaho and the season ends on the 24th. Also any pointers on field judging a mature mule deer? Want to get a buck but I don't want to kill a young deer that has potential in the future. Feel free to pm me also. Thanks

On field judging
If you see a buck that makes it hard to breathe, your knees start to knock , and your body starts trembling, it's time to shoot, score is not important. At least to me
If you see a buck and you have to think about it, try to guess how big it is , wonder if you should shoot it , don't shoot

The best advice I can give

In a unit that is only open through the 24th I would hunt the 1st 10 days, if you decide to hunt a unit that is open through the 31st I would hunt the last 10 as you may get a little rutting action right at the tail end

I would recommend maybe coming out a few days before the opener and hopefully locate one you can hunt those first few days. Good luck! Keep us posted

Yeah I'm planning on getting there 2-3 days early to at least locate some good basins to glass and get points on my gps for hiking in the dark.

Any other advice is very much welcomed. First time going on a out of state hunt

Spot on. Go early, find some deer for the opener.

Thanks that's a good point chains and a shovel

you will have a lot more company the 1st part of the hunt typically through the first weekend its crowded. I would definitely use some of your vacation time to come well ahead of the opener to scout and try to get a buck pattered. two years ago we went in 3 days before the 10th and had 3 good bucks pattered. day before the opener 2 other groups came in. opening day we had one of those groups sit down 14 yards away from us, even though they knew we were there, and glass the same basin we were glassing. this was 10 miles from the truck too. be prepared for a ##### show October 10th. luckily they were shitty hunters and didn't spot the buck my buddy ended up killing.

Yeah I'm a little nervous about the amount of people I'll be seeing but planning on glassing all morning and then the evenings til dark. Let everyone else push the deer for me
