Unit 70 Moose

I am the lucky recipient of a Disabled Veteran Special Permit for a bull moose in Unit 70. I'm hoping you kind folks can give me some intel on the unit. I spent several years in Alaska and am familiar with hunting the big guys (unsuccessfully) but as I live in Olympia, I haven't had a chance to scout the area, although I've done a lot of internet research and have good maps. Any information as to general area, high/low, preferable access points, etc would be greatly appreciated. I'll be hunting from the 3rd week in September to however long it takes. Thanks in advance!

Congratulations on the tag. I've never hunted that particular unit so I can't help much. I'm sure you'll receive some helpful PM?s.
I am confident you'll have a great hunt and find a bull. Best of luck.

No unit tips for a wanna-be moose slayer? I hope I didn't pick an area so obscure that nobody goes there... then again, I wouldn't have any competition, Lol !

I believe there are only five permits for that unit. And maybe one could go to a non-resident. I wasn?t aware of a disabled permit available. By what means did you obtain it?

Congrats on the tag and thanks for your service to our great nation. I don't know anything about the unit but I'm sure you'll be able to get someone to throw some info your way.

Thanks for the answer to my question.
I know that unit well and have helped a few others on this site with deer and moose hunts in that area. I would be happy to help you as well if you want to PM me with your contact info we can get in touch and I'll share what I know.

Sure did! Took a total of 3 trips, 5500 miles, but I got it done. Not a biggie, but some of the best game I'v ever tasted. Second trip was cut short when my ATV crapped out, but I was tarting to see several bulls in the Midnight Creek and City Creek areas. For the 3rd trip, I ended up making a great new friend who let me know about a great bull in the south end of the unit. He disappeared before I could get out there, but Steve helped me take a little guy up Gibson Jack and pack him out on horseback. It's not the size but the memories that make the hunt for me.

First if all thank you for your service! And congratulations! I shot a moose last year and being disabled as well I was sure grateful for the help I received to get it out. And agreed the best game I've ever tasted. My wife even likes it ?

Beautiful country down in SE Idaho.

Valley view of the mountain we tackled on the first morning of the last hunt. Left at 5 am with flashlights, frozen ground with a new dusting of slippery snow, right out of the truck after 800 mile drive and about 4 hours sleep, no breakfast and only a Egg McMufffin and Nachos Belg Grande the day before, dehydrated from too much coffee and not acclimated to the altitude. Huge moose had been hanging out near the top for the past 3-4 days before i got there. Hiked from the valley almost all the way to the top on second ridge from right side of pic, worked all the way to the left side.....aaaaaand no moose. Day late and a dollar short! At least I get to take pass on my cardio stress test this year.

Spent the next day on quad and foot, nothing showed. Steve offered up the use of his horses the following day and we headed out at daybreak. 15-20 minutes down the trail, bull moose spotted. 20 minutes later, moose down! Like I said, a little guy but a trophy to me.
