Deer moving from opener storms?

We were in the 39/43 country in Central Idaho and I watched groups of 8-12 moving S from unit border toward 44 to 45 winter grounds as early as Tue afternoon. Saw more tracks daily, but they didn't seem to blow out all together.

Anyone else?

Is there snow up there? If so, what elevation is the snow line?

I love it when a good early snow pushes the deer around; it should make for some good hunting!

LAST EDITED ON Oct-17-18 AT 07:28AM (MST)[p]The deer in 39, 43,44,and 48 will migrate around the 10th. snow or no snow.My buddy has a bull tag for 45,and on the 8th. we never one deer, and on the 13th. saw over 300. In 2 more weeks there will be 100's more. My grand son has the 45 buck tag,and we will hunt the last 5 days of the season, there will be a lot of nice bucks, but the trick is to find THE BUCK!!

Anyone know if the F&G still radio collar and track deer? I know about ten years ago they did this, had does in unit 43 collared, tracked them high up in summer, then like clockwork they all migrated south into unit 44 before or during the first week of October.

I saw two radio collared does in 43 on the 6th of October this year. One radio collar looked old and dirty but the other collar looked brand new.

That's funny I too saw two does with collars. One on the 9th, and one on the 12th.

I don't at all agree that the deer in C Idaho all start migrating the first week or first 10 days, I think that's what was said.

I agree they usually migrate in Oct. Usually a lot of does end up in wintering grounds by end of Oct, but I've definitely seen them stay high until say Oct 20-25th, even does/fawns.

Seems they move with less and less weather the last 5-7yrs. I wonder if the fire areas had anything to do with it, but where I hunt, they almost exclusively hang in the 3-5yr old burn areas now.

I have a less mobile friend coming this weekend, for 7-10 days and deciding where to take him. I have spots from 3000' to 9000' so we'll find the deer, but lower is better for him if it works out.

Of course not all the deer migrate early...otherwise harvest in those units would be very low and everyone would quit hunting there unless the season dates were adjusted by F&G. Plenty of deer are seen and many bucks are taken after October 10th.

In my spot in 43, the deer do not move out until we get that first real storm typically around 10/10 - 10/15. If we do not get a storm and it's very mild, they seem to move out on their own and from all the shooting, starting around 10/20 - 10/25. That's just been my experience and every spot is a little different.

In my area, I do not think they make it all the way to 44 and 45 until we get 2 or 3 solid storms in October. I've found a lot of deer staging in the thicker mid country around 5000 to 6500 below my spot, in years like this. One big early storm followed by 7-10 days of a warm high pressure system, just like this year.

Good bucks probably hard to find, after the opening week gauntlet and without any weather to force them to eat.

Glad I saw this post. I've lived in Boise 10 years now and I am from SE ID. I have had a hard time finding deer berfore novmeber but I've also been hunting in the danskins and above boise. All times were not good just tons of ppl and vehicles. I have been looking at maps and google earth at unit 43. If anyone has any good pointers im all ears. You can also pm me and i can tell you where i am looking. Solo hunter here wife and kid are at home and another on the way so probably solo hunting for a few more years until they grow up. Any help would be appreciated. I know how to hunt decently well and I understand getting out putting on miles, glassing, and getting away from ppl. Idaho born and raised, going out tomorrow to try and fill the freezer.
