how long does it take to draw in wahsington in a good unit, that has access to public land, nomatter what weapon, prefrably during the rut

It's never a given, points just keep building increasing your chances to draw, but no alottment of tags to the highest point holders. We are starting to get a bunch of rut hunt tags, but just a few in most units so drawing is still super tough. And if you're a non-resident, it isn't hardly worth playing the game because you have to buy all the licenses and tags before you can even apply for anything special permits.

MDC covered it pretty well. My guess is that when you get to 10 points you are just getting in the game.

The downside to building points is for ten points you're into it for $4,500, that's with no price increases. And you're still not guaranteed anything (my wife has 13 and she still can't draw)! For $4,500 a guy can start looking at some pretty good hunts elsewhere, in a state noted for more and bigger bulls than WA. And if you're after a Blues tag in WA get in line, the odds are so low the preference point system doesn't help a whole lot.

there's a guy on another forum talking of drawing a watershed tag with 4 points.

LAST EDITED ON May-05-07 AT 04:49PM (MST)[p]You dont have to be maxed out on points to get drawn. There are people who have been drawn their first time out.Mdc how do you figure your in 4500 bucks for ten points.

That's what I was wondering as well. 10 points is 10 years. You divide $4500 by 10 and you get $450 dollars a year!! The numbers aren't adding up, since an elk tag currently costs about $40. Scott

You'd have to be a fool to build up points in WA, when you can build up points in a state like UT for practically nothing. Even AZ would only set you back about $1200 for ten points.

Not too much new to add here, I think most of the rifle tags in the state guys draw with between 6-10 points, although there are those who draw with less.

Its all a lottery....someone with no points has 1 chance...everyone else is squared so if you have say 7 points you have 49 chances to that other guys 1...BUT...he does have a chance. Thats why I only put in for the hunts(for Bulls) that are High percentage kill areas...there are areas that aren't worth wasting your points....Les

I didn't say a guy had no chance without a bunch of points, I merely stated that points just add you to the draw more times (i.e. 75% of the tags don't go to the guys with the most points like many of the other states do). And yes, the roughly $4,500 was in reference to playing as a non-resident, which I thought I included in the post? Anyways, unless you just got piles of money to burn it's much cheaper to build points in several of the other states that are more noted for great elk hunting! I think, unless I'm missing one, WA is the most expensive state of the 11 western states to build up points in! But play it some people do, we have a handfull of non-residents draw tags for most of the different species each year... go figure?

I don't think Moosestock is right. Washington points only gives you one more entry into the system. It is not a Nevada preference point system that squares your preference points(7 preference points would give you 49 chances). I wish this state was because the more points you have your chances improve greatly. Seven tries out of 1000 people trying doesn't look so good but 49 tries looks a lot better. I don't think I am wrong on this but set me straight if I am.

Here's the cut and paste from the link that Bob D. provided.

Q: I heard that the points have multipliers on them. What is that for?

A: Some permit drawing systems are designed so that one random number is issued for each point built up for the species by the applicant. It is the same as having one card in the barrel for each point (one point - one card, two points - two cards, etc.).

Washington's system places a multiplier on the points. The number of points is squared and it is this number of random numbers that are issued to the application (or number of cards in the barrel). If a person applies for an elk permit for the first time, they have one card in the barrel. If a person has built up two points, they have four cards in the barrel. If a person has three points built up, nine cards are in the barrel and so on.

Placing a multiplier on the points more noticeably increases the chances of being selected over someone who is a new applicant or was recently awarded a permit as points are built up.

Thanks for setting me straight. Is this new? I talked for quite some time several years ago about the draw system in this state with a WDFW employee and thats not what she told me. Whats more disturbing is I have 7 points for deer and was trying for the last four years to draw a tag that has a 1 in 4 chance of drawing. I can's see how with 49 entries into a drawing that would have a 1 in 4 success rate that I would not get drawn. That would be 36 tries in 2005 and 25 in 2004 and so on. I have got to be the un-luckiest SOB out there!

Shane, it's not new...it's been the same way since 1996, when the point system started. As far as not drawing that deer permit, if it's a popular hunt, you have to consider that many of the same people putting in for it may have just as many, or more, points than you have.

It's exactly like NV because the same guy implemented both systems. George Tsukamoto started their system when he worked there and when he hired on with WA, ours started shortly thereafter.

If the point system started in 96, then max points would be 11, so how can your wife have 13 unless she has only put in for 2 years and turned in a poacher. Just curious on the point accumalation.

I have drawn 4 bull tags and 6 buck tags since the bonus points system started. One of my buddies sun in law drew a sheep tag this year with 2 bonus points. I have lots of buddies that have never drawn a bull tag and they put in for the same ones I put in for and they have max points. Can you say LUCK.

I don't think people relize how the draw works? I have drawn two Any Bull Tags. One with 0 Points the other with 3. Alot of people apply with one choice? If they new how the Draw worked they would have their choices ALL filled out for every species!!! I drew both Tags second choice. If I would have only selected one choice I would NOT have got either tag!!! Good Luck
