My 12 year old son got drawn for the desert 290 unit youth permit he has only 2 days to hunt in september it is modern firearm and if somebody could give me some pointers it sure would be nice thanks

I went out with a friend of mine who drew the Nov permit several years ago. During that time of year, we found them in the bitter brush. I'm not sure they will be in that stuff in Sept but, there are deer all over that unit. Take a good pair of bino's and a spotting scope. Get up on the sand dunes and do alot of glassing. You will see deer a mile or two away that you will want to check with the spotting scope before you make the long trek. It may be a hot hunt that time of year so be prepared for the heat. Good luck!

In September I would stay close to the canals and cattails. It will be hot and the deer will not be moving during the day. You have an hour or two in the morning to watch them move. After that you will have to bird dog for your son. Good news is that the bucks have not been pressured yet. Also many bucks running together so if you see one buck more than likely there are more. Send me a PM as to what the days are I might be able to help.

A couple of more questions for those who have been in the Desert Unit: 1) Can you legally ride a mountain bike in the area? 2) Is the gound all sandy or is there enough solid ground to ride a mtn bike?

Thanks,

Dan

As a twenty year fisherman and hunter of the potholes reservor, it is mainly sand. Consider a boat hunt and beach it and move around that way. If Fletch sent you a pm, you won't go wrong with his advice, that's for sure.

It's all sand, really tough to ride a mountain bike around! This time of the year the deer are mostly around the reservoir. They come out of the willows really early and late, probably won't see a whole lot of animals roaming around in the day time! By the way congratulations on the tag and good luck!
