Loowit unit (522)

Does anyone know what happened to it?? i heard it was made into a disabled unit and this makes me vey angry because me and my Dad scouted there and hunted a whole bunch and now we dont know where to go. There were already a lot of diabled roads in that area. Loowit takes up most of the whole mt. st. helens area and i dont understand why they would just take it out of the general season. Please tell me what is going on and you think.

Wow, lets take a step back. What do you mean you have been hunting it? This unit has been closed (from what I understand) since after the mountain poped its top. Loowit only takes up the mudflow area and a portion just infront on the crater. To the east and south it is the Lewis River unit (general season deer and elk). To the west it is the Toutle (pemit only elk, general deer). To the north, northwest it is the Margaret (permit only elk general deer). As for a disable hunt it is a "Elk Area" called the "mudflow" It does not take up the whole Loowit unit just the wildlife area in the western part.

Could you elaborate on exactly were you were hunting and what you are hunting for?

I was hunting for elk and deer last year around craggy peak area. I talked to people around there and they had been hunting there for years and it was open for general season.

Thats up by Pinto Rock.. You are in the Lewis River Unit. That is still open to general Elk and Deer. You should have no problems hunting there. The Loowit is on the west side of the Mt. You are on the east. The east side of Hwy 25. Am I on the same peak you are talking about?

Are you sure?? To the east of 25 is lewis river??if thats the case then i was hunting in lewis river unit. we were also hunting around lewis river horse camp and wright meadows. do you know the area??

Yea, I am sure. Wright Meadows is in-between craggy peak and forest service RD 90. I beleive the Horse camp is off of 93. Am I still in the area you are talking about?

I have done a bunch of Elk hunting up around Pinto Rock, Baby Shoe Pass, Spencer Meadows, Yellow Jacket Creek. I beleive these are in you area also. This area is Lewis River. Pick up the game regs and check it out.

ya thats the area where i hunt. I have the regs book its just our map isnt very good and some people that hunt there said that it was the loowit unit. Thanks a lot. I finally figured it out. We thought we were gonna have to find a new area. Did you bear hunt this year around that area in august??

No I do not hunt up there for bear. I have hunted the west side of 25 up around bean creek. I do allot of bear hunting in the high county before the High Buck hunt. Boy talk about some miss informed hunters. Or they were pulling your leg looking for one less person in the area. Good luck let us know how you do.

Well I guess so. Thanks again and I have high hopes now for elk season. If i get lucky ill post it. My dad saw a gigantic 6x6 last year but his gun jammed. Were hoping to catch him this year. I also saw a big 5x5 last year during deer huting. Good luck to you too.

Wow, when I read that first posts I was a bit worried. I was thinking if you had been hunting in the Loowit you are one luck guy. However You might not want to talk to much about it. No the loowit has been closed for pretty much ever but it would be awesome if F/G would put out a few permits. But they would rather the elk starve to death before letting us shoot a few.
