Toutle Elk

Hey, Just wanted to know who has drawn a Toutle elk tag before. I have one this year and wanted to see some pics of the lucky few who have taken a bull in this unit. Been in there a bunch and have seen some monsters. That was until the deer hunters started to fling lead!

My brother drew one this year for the archery hunt and took a really nice 5 point. Don't have any pictures yet.

I believe I'm the brother Wake1 was talking about. Best hunt of my life. The bull I ended up with definitely wasn't the biggest my buddy & I chased around but to me he's a great bull that I worked very hard for. 4 days into our hunt I had clipped a limb shooting at a 6x6 and the arrow took a 45 degree & buried in a fir tree and I shot left on a 5x5. I took the next morning and sighted back in on the block & made some small ajustments. That afternoon after stalking a bugling bull a half mile down the mountain we bumped out an a logging road. We were on a bend in the road cow calling when a bobcat came around behind me. I whacked him at 35 yards. At 1st I thought he was a small cougar he's so red. 24 lbs. That gave me a real confidence boost on my shooting. On Sat my 8th day up there we were about half way through about a mile of timber when this guy bugled at us at about 45 yards in tight timber. We stayed put and quite and I think he was curious and came in another 10 yards and gave me an opening between 3 trees. I somehow threaded them & put it between his front shoulder & chest. He crashed through the brush 158 ft (checked it by GPS) and piled up. We waited a half an hour and found him. Success! That smile still isn't off my face. One of the biggest lessons we learned up there was these animals are wise to calls. They will bugle at you and answer Bull & cow calls but they will pin point you and move away. This happened repeatedly and was confirmed by other hunters we talked to up there. The other is to really use your GPS. Good luck this year & shoot straight.

Nice bull. I have been up there a bunch and seen some great bulls. Ever since the deer hunters came in all I have been seeing is rags. did you find most of your bulls in the timber, or in the bottoms. I am going out this weekend and checking both to see were I will start next weekend. Any info would help!

When I mean in the timber I would like to know around the clearcuts or in the big timber N side?

We kept to the big timber. Try the 3020, 3025, 3023. I have many waypoints. If you have a GPS I would give you some of them. They are all where I saw bulls. I saw more big bulls than I saw raghorns. Went up top a few times & saw some fine bulls, mostly on the Loowit side. Of course. The timber held a lot more animals. We saw shooters every time we went in. Just couldn't always get a set up. I hit a limb on a really nice 6x6 & just plain missed another 5x5. Passed on 2 5x5's because the shot sucked.

Hey thanks for the info I sent you an e-mail, take a look and tell me what ya think.
