I drew this tag this year and I am pumped to be able to take my 300 RUM out during the rut. I have hunted this unit before, mostly above the town of Juntura and we have seen some great bucks there. I got a decent 4x3 last year. I was wondering if anyone has had some experience in that area during November? Thoughts on wintering grounds and what not. Any thoughts/advice are much appreciated!

Congrats you lucky SOB.
North of Juntura is Beulah I figure. I put in for that but didn't draw. Kinda a fun gig though, this premium hunt thing.
I don't think that you'll find too many guys that have been deer hunting up there in November, or that will admit it anyway lol.
I had the Beulah late elk tag a couple times and had great fun. It all comes down to snow on that hunt. Pretty hard to give any specific advice...we saw big bucks below the elk and big bucks above the elk. Damn sure buy a cougar tag as they will be very active.
I would go as high as you can and hope for snow. Deer can be anywhere in that country, but give it a solid week and you should be able to find a 180 model I bet.

Congrats!
That's the tag my wife was after!
I have hunted this unit a couple of times for deer and antelope. That's the tough part, what's going on in November, I can say I have never been there then.
I would go to Ifish.net and register, then introduce yourself and ask the elk hunters in the forum for help! Their pretty good about it if asked politely!? I have never seen anything over 26" wide in there but there are some big ones in the unit!
Post your results we would love to hear how you do!

Congratulations! I've elk hunted that unit a lot in November but usually the northwest part of the unit, it sure would be fun to deer hunt any of that in November! November is a wildcard, some years you're looking at a couple feet of snow up high, others it's 50 degrees. Usually though, the deer have not moved all the way down to any of their wintering grounds by that point, they will be transitioning so you'll have to find them. The good thing is if you find does, you'll find bucks. PM me if you have any specific questions.

I hunted the southern part of malhueur for 20 years or so we took a few nice bucks over the years, then it declined. If you have time I would look over the whole unit, the northern part you would get some interaction with elk hunters , but not much in the south, and a large portion in the south burnt up a couple years ago.
I would look at warm springs and other areas they will move into out of the stinkingwaters as well.
Great Tag. congrats

I've never hunted there, but we drive through it every year in Nov around the 10th or so headed to Idaho to hunt. I can tell you we try to roll through there at daylight because of all the big muley bucks we can see right off the highway! We've seen some absolute TOADS within a couple hundred yards or the road, even in it. Granted that's probably private, but none the less, they're out and showing themselves like no big deal. Good luck to you. My son drew the premium interstate unit.

Thanks for everyones insight. I will post updates!

If I had that tag I'd wait until the rut them do nothing but drive and glass. the more miles you cover the better your chances of finding the buck you're after.

Ask the chucker hunters what they've been seeing and cover the northern part yourself.

Congrats , you have one of the few tags in OR with a realistic chance at a trophy mule deer.

I agree, I am only hunting in November. I got 9 days in Nov blocked out so far. Funny thing is I was just talking about your strategy the other day with the buddy that is going with me. We are trying to find one other guy so we have two rigs driving around looking...

LAST EDITED ON Aug-09-16 AT 07:27PM (MST)[p]I had to edit my post asking What is the L66? Guess I had better read the regs better from here on out. Missed that one.

Our group shot this on the second day of rifle season, not sure I would shoot him in Nov...

A 22-24" 3 pt?? If you shoot that your banned!!!
Honestly, no less that's a heavy 4x4 24" or bigger should even be considered with this tag.
Find the does find the bucks and glass, glass, glass!!

LAST EDITED ON Oct-26-16 AT 09:06AM (MST)[p]Drive and glass drive and glass drive and glass, I hear the rut is starting to pick up

LAST EDITED ON Dec-07-18 AT 08:05AM (MST)[p]Unofficially around 170, it was the first time the ODFW guy taped a ram and was kind of clueless. It was also the first time he drilled for the metal pin and I watched him with horror as he was drilling into my rams horn. I dropped him off at the taxidermist too quickly and didn't do an official tape. He will probably score between 173-175. He doesn't score as much as he pictures because he doesn't drop low enough and doesn't have the length. Not the biggest ram we saw, but one that gave us a great opportunity and I couldn't pass up on the curl that he had. He was also a mean SOB and was fighting with all of the other rams that he was with. I am not a score guy by any means...

Stud ram - regardless of score!!! And nice buck too! What a year!

Curious if you'd seen the ram before you ended up shooting him. The brooming on his tips looks pretty danged fresh and just curious if you knew how much he had lost.

We found him the day before the opener and again on the night of the opener. Had no idea he was there and the major guiding outfit had never seen him before either. He was with around 14 other rams. He was my back up target ram as there was a larger ram around, but he was hard to pass on...
