My son drew his first elk tag - the Rogue cow elk - open August 1 to December 31. Ideas for spots to start scouting - planning on heading up in the next two weeks to look around. Any suggestions on hunting early vs late?

Great opportunity for the youth - he is really excited to go after his first elk.

Thanks for any suggestions in advance

My kids have had the youth tag several times, other units. never shot one in August because of the heat. With the long season you can work around his schedule. Nothing like being out there an hour or two before day light on September 28th (in between all the other seasons) and have the bulls call you in. Have fun!!!!!

Thanks DZ - it is all he has been talking about since the draw. He is really excited to finally get to elk hunt with a tag in hand!!

You'll run into all sorts of elk up around the back of C2 during November. Lots of elk back there above the ranch and sometimes the ranch will let kids harvest an elk with permission. Just need to ask them as they are big into helping kids. Good Luck!!

Headed up to start looking for a cow elk for my son - has anyone been out scouting the rogue yet? I know the archery hunters will be out there chasing the Bulls!

C2 was sold n no more hunting nor firearms allowed on the ranch so where do u think the elk will be all sea son...?...lol

Thinking about taking a ride up this weekend with my son and looking around for a cow? Anybody run into them during archery???

It is nice to have so much time. Maybe the snow will come and give you the advantage you need. Stay after it.

Hunted 3 days this past weekend in the snow - never saw a track. Saw some deer - and talked to a few deer hunters who also had not seen an elk. Hunted all around the west park line and near Prospect. It was tough.

Bummer Well I hope you get out again. The snow has come. Hope it helps. Hope the time together has been a blessing. I expect pictures on the next post :)

Try up 140 around Wassom Canyon. You should find some herds up there with the snow right now. They hunker down in there this time of year and we've been successful each time we have had the cow tag in there.

Good Luck!

Hoping to see a success post. It was tough going around here. At first not enough snow to bring them down then way to much snow to get around. We ended up filling two of the three late cow tags we had. Hope to hear from you soon.
