Waited 15 years for this tag and finally got it. Really excited.

Has anybody heard how this unit has been the past couple of years? I have heard a couple good reports.

Thanks,

Tough hunt but one of Oregon's better ones. I took a nice 180 double drop tine buck in there about 15 years ago and 2 guys I know have hunted it since. one took an okay buck and the other ate his tag.

The trophy potential is there but the herd numbers are not near what they should be. take as much time to hunt as you can and plan to hunt hard.

I know of a great buck killed last year in the burn. Over 180 with great mass. Looked like an old deer. Good luck,

Rich

What areas burned? I made a trip over this weekend to scout, but we had to head out almost as soon as we got there because my buddy took a nasty spill.

Can't say I am a great mule deer hunter. From speaking with others and my limited experience, it seems the high desert Muleys like the sage and rock out croppings more than the aspen and green grass in the draws?

No, they love the aspen . you'll find them outside the aspen early in the morning and right before dark. during the day you'd have to burn them out to get a look at them.

They also like the mahogany patches and love to bed in rocky mahogany areas .

Of course you can find them in the rocks and sage or anywhere for that matter but if you're near aspen the deer will use it.

I like to hunt high and spent most of my time near the head of Mcdermitt Creek and east on the Skyline Road. but guys who hunted down low were saying they'd seen a few big bucks below Grouse Springs near the Whitehorse. in that country that time of year I don't think there is a right or a wrong place.

Glass glass glass, if you don't have good optics get some. I've never hunted anywhere you could glass more efficient than the TC's.

Are you doing the Traditional hunt in there and how successful have you been? That is a hunt I plan on starting to do once I draw my Hart Mt. tag.

To the OP I have friend that killed a big Heavy 179" deer in there 2 years ago opening day.

The Trouts ended up being a decent hunt. I harvested a decent deer, and my Dad had an opportunity to harvest a decent deer.

Thanks to those that provided input.

Here is a picture of the buck I harvested in Trout Creek this year.

Hi there,

Wow, ghat is a tremendous buck and looks very similar to one I saw during archery season that year... I'm an avid Trout Creek Hunter and have hunted it hard since '91... Just curious what that buck scored...

The droptine gene is very prevalent there... do you have a picture of your drop tine buck, that's about the same time we were seeing a good droptine during archery

The drop tine thing is a fact in the area. about 15 years ago I took a buck off the TC's that had heavy 9" drops off both main beams. I've even seen younger bucks with drops there.
