Where does the time go?? So.....could draw pretty much any tag with the exception of Mount Emily. I have been saving my points for Mt. Em late but I have been hearing that it just aint all that. I posted last year on Mt. Em and didn't get any positive responses and I have a buddy that lives in Pendleton that he has been giving me some advice on the unit, he hunts it a lot for spikes and general deer. Anyway, Juniper muzzie, Trout Creek, Steens, North Warner....I sure want to spend my points carefully and whatever I go for, I will give it my all. For a NR that isn't young anymore, this will be a one-time shot. Any ideas would be appreciated and feel free to PM me if you like. I won't be hiring a guide and have a couple of mule deer junkies that will go along for the experience. Thanks!!

I have nothing good to help you. Except you could invite 9 of your best friends to join you on a fun hunt to Oregon. Pine creek, Keating or Catherine creek all produce good bucks with the occasional whopper. 2 points will get you these three tags. Sorry that 20 years of putting in in Oregon doesn't get you a better opportunity. Waiting for it to get better could work but I don't think it will.

If you send me an email, I can tell you some of what I learned hunting one of the units you mentioned this year.

Thanks,

If I had 20 points, I would probably get a few guys that wanted to go along and share expenses and check the draw odds and see how I could split my points 2-3 ways and get the best tag. If you apply as a party, all your points get averaged out and then you get tags based on that. So with 2 guys you would have 10 points each, 4 would have 5 points each, etc. I would say pick your guys first and then pick your hunt, most of the lower level tags are of similar quality. But if you are set on a trophy hunt, just pick one of those hunts you mentioned, though I can't speak from experience on North Warner, the others have higher than average potential for a great buck. Personally the Juniper and Trout Creek appeal more to me because there are very few tags in those units and it would seem more relaxing. Good luck!

I'd say DZ hit the nail on the head.

One thing I'd add is I don't think waiting will gain you anything so burn you points and stop getting screwed. Oregon hasn't had a winter kill in over 20 years and our deer herds are worse than ever in most units. do the math , if we get a bad winter mule deer will be on the ESA list here.

PS , ignore the guys who see 20 B&C bucks a year but never kill one or brag about killing dinks on a regular basis. they're not going to help you.

I also tried to send a PM. Would you be interested in doing an Archery hunt? There are several great Archery hunts you could do with your points. I would be happy to help with some suggestions if you want to PM me and are interested. As far as rifle i agree to put in with some buddies and have a good hunt.

I wouldn't get discouraged by the negative comments, there are plenty of units with good bucks i would be happy to hang on my wall here in OR.

I emailed Brian Latturner "Founder" and he said that my account is fine but obviously it isn't as I had 3 people try to PM me and it didn't work. If you want to give me a call, that would be great. My phone is 530-632-2091, thanks

If I were you I'd start by asking to see pictures of the monster bucks people tell you about when giving you great advice.

Lots of BS out there so beware.

Mule deer is what I was thinkin, could go for a benchleg I guess in White River but I like hunting open country and glassing. If I draw, I will do it right by scouting and hunting hard, I am not going to waste 20 points by not putting in the time necessary to do the hunt justice. I have good equipment and camp. I appreciate the input, thanks.

If you want to hunt in the next year or two you should look at Trout Creeks, Juniper muzzle loader or take another person with your points to the Steens.

White River is the best hunt in the state and if there is a NR tag there in 2017 you might draw it. but since they're classed as mule deer it's not a true trophy hunt from the book standpoint.

None of these hunts are worth 20 points but they're the best you can do. I doubt waiting will bring improvement because there is no pressure on ODFW for improvement.
