Mule Deer help needed

Much of it very rough. I question if there's anything as rough in NM. at least I haven't seen it.

It's about as good as any unit in Oregon. if you're willing to work it may be one of the best. you might need a point or two to draw.

That said I'd see what things look like in the spring. we're having a bad winter and NE Oregon is the worst in the state. this could be a deer killer.

Thanks for the advice Togwotee. I appreciate the insight. Did not mean to say NM as rough as this country in Hells Canyon. Trying to say I have more rough country experience than say dense forest.

When you're talking dense forest maybe you're talking the west side. I have no idea how you'd hunt that , a 30-30 with a bayonet I suppose. most of the east side hunts are traditional mule deer hunting.

I wasn't kidding about the winter kill this year. we're supposed to get up to another foot this week on top of 2 feet of low elevation snow we already have here in central Oregon. up north towards where you're talking about is even worse. a big die off on an already very low deer count would be devastating. and of course fawns and older bucks go first.

I'm very concerned.

I moved to Portland area for work. I don't have any intention to hunt NW , I like Muleys and don't know how to hunt the dense forests where I live anyways. This is why I'm looking east but really have no idea where to start hence the request for input.

To look at your odds of drawing a tag google Ron Wold google pages. Ron publishes the best free odds for hunt draws I have seen. Eastern and western Oregon are two entirely different places. Hells canyon is a tough place. You could see a buck and he might literally be two days away.

Most of the east hunts take more than 1 point so start your research now.

I have hunted the snake a number of times and my opinion is that yes, there are some good deer there but not many and it is a quality experience if you can escape people which can be hard to do. I used to drive 8hrs to access my spot 30 miles in and had it all to myself. The forest service improved the road so that the last time I was there I found 17 horse trailers where previously there were none. I believe the success data is skewed by the number of deer shot on private land at the lower elevations. I doubt 30% of the hunters even see a buck on the public portion. I have also hunted it during elk season in nov when the bucks should be visible with the rut and only saw a handful of deer. There are much better zones to hunt that are easier to draw.

Thank you Missalot. That was very informative. I appreciate you sharing your experience. Do you have any units to suggest? I am primarily archery but hunt rifle also.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-08-17 AT 12:02PM (MST)[p]After this winter Mule Deer in Oregon will be extinct! You might want to try Sonora!

LAST EDITED ON Jan-08-17 AT 07:25PM (MST)[p]If we have a major die off ODFW should close season in those units. they won't.

The only Game in Oregon Department Of Fish and Game is the money Game.

Here in central Oregon it's bad. real bad. the upper country guys are saying they're finding dead deer already. the only reason I haven't found any dead deer is because there aren't any on me anymore. but the elk are doing fine by trashing hay sheds.
