Hey all,

Moved to Oregon a year ago from Montana and the dust is finally settling and I am ready to get set for hunting season.

I am interested in Elk (coastal if at all possible), Mulies as well as Black tail (never hunted them before).

Any tips and trick would be greatly appreciated. I am still decyphering the Oregon regs.

Thanks in advance

Glocker21,

Welcome to Oregon, I don't mean to be a negative guy but I am a fourth generation native Oregonian and have hunted Oregon mule deer for 38 seasons straight and elk 34 of those years and coming from Montana you're probably in for a rude awakening. My only tip is to get into archery if you're not already because it's the only way to get tags consistently. Second save some money to be able to go back to Montana on occasion. There are deer and elk to be had but archery helps and having reasonable expectations is another. More hunters, less deer, decent numbers of elk. But hey a bad day hunting is better than a good day at work.
Good luck.

Now that you are closer to nevada, start pitting in there where you have a chance. I do believe archery is the answer though while a guy builds some points.
In a positive note, i have fun on a hunt that can do every other with a rifle. Thats non res too. Good enough to spend the 500+ bucks to just get the tag.
Dates are tough but easy to fill a tag with a buck at least.

I made a couple podcasts for new blacktail deer hunters. You will probably know most of the info but may learn something new.

Deer Hunting Tips & Tactics

Treestands & Blinds

A few books I would recommend are:

Boyd Iverson "Blacktail Trophy Tactics 2" and Scott Haugen's book "Trophy Blacktails. The Science of the Hunt" both do a pretty good job at explaining blacktails and hunting deer.

I would also highly recommend getting "Mapping Trophy Bucks" By: Brad Herndon

Elknut books, DVD's. CD's for elk hunting.

ODFW has a lot of good information on their website.

Look up western Oregon state forestry offices and call to see if they have any maps showing all timber company locations.

Also check out ifish(dot)net as it has a lot of hunting information in Oregon. Use the search function and you will find hours upon hours of reading material. Good luck and feel free to ask any questions.
