Drew the Walla Walla Archery Bull Tag after 15 years. Seeing if anyone on here has drawn the tag in the last few years. Going over scouting in a couple weeks. Going to be solo hunting last 2 weeks of season. I decided to cash in my points now that my kids are old enough to hunt so I can hunt with them from now on so this will be a once in a lifetime tag. Just curious on other people expierience with the tag. Quality of bulls and quantity. Were they more vocal then general season. I know its steep and I've hunted the snake so I'm preparing for that. Any other advice.

Thanks,
David

The bulls aren't in the steep stuff during archery season, they will be up on top. It is very thick vegetation wise. They generally don't come to calls at least that was my buddies experience a couple years ago. He would just sneak in on bugling bulls to see what they looked like. He would be super close to bulls and scream bugles and cow calls at them and they could care less. He killed a decent 6x6 and then ended up seeing some GIANTS later on.

That's interesting. I would have guessed they would respond better to calls. Good to know about them being up on top and yes I have heard it is thick. It will be interesting to see once I'm over there.

They will stay on top until the chuckleheads start bugling off every wide spot in the road, then they stay in the btm.

friend killed a 368" bull in there about 4yrs ago during archery. He spent all summer in there setting cams and watching the routes. He passed on several good 300-330" bulls before taking his beast.

PM me and 'll get you his info, I know he would be happy to share

congrats on drawing the tag, its a good one!
had it about 10 years ago or so. shot a 6 pt but nothing huge. the rutting activity that year for whatever reason was very slow. bring good optics cause the country lends itself to glassing cross canyon to locate elk.
if you have a dirt bike, there is lots of trails which may come in handy when packing out out of the bottom.
it is very brushy, maybe more so then parts of the coast.
be sure to focus of yew tree patches because the bulls like to be close to or in those dense patches of brush.
good luck and enjoy the hunt with your kids!

Believe me, the bulls will be rutting on top of the ridges. During the rifle tag season they will be in the canyons.

Sure would be cool to hear this guy got a bull! No replies unless I'm missing something?! People ask for help but it seems most people with less than 10 followers never come back & tell us anything.

Hope I'm wrong here :)

Sorry for not getting back. I was there for 9 days and filled my tag on a nice 6x6 that was 315-320ish. Was on some nice bulls that would go 350-370 but either no shot or hit a limb. Not a lot of luck based off the the other hunters over there hunting the wenaha side or walla walla side.Didn?t realize how thick it is over there being eastern Oregon. Also filled my bear tag couple days in which was awesome minus the 8 mile pack out but was worth it. I will try to get a pic up when I have alittle more time.

Congratulations on your hunt David.
What made you chose Walla Walla archery over the other 2 top 3 units, or rifle? Just trying to decide where to invest my 22 NR points in the next few years.
Thanks
Bill

I chose walla walla mainly due to me having enough points to draw it now vs waiting another year. Mt Emily was another year out and wenaha was another 7 years most likely with point creep. Walla walla was way more limited as far as area and terrain. There were several areas I know I could have killed bulls pretty easy minus no way to pack them out. It's a tough hunt compared to what I could see across the rd in wenaha. I was calling bulls from wenaha right into the rd at 20 yds but they wouldn't cross over. I don't think you can really go wrong with any of the 3 but I know walla walla is the most physically demanding. Good luck on your next draw.
