Did some scouting today, Saw a pretty good number of deer. They where hiding from mosquitos out in the open. Found a few camp locations in the area i plan on hunting. Away from the road hunters. Bow hunters are out doing stands/salt blocks already. Sign of other deer hunters out scouting new camps, Some areas had fresh truck tracks in every camp. Lots of thinning operations going on, If you have not been down in a while you better check your areas.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------support your local guzzlers. Its good to hear you saw a good number of deer. The last several years the hunter sucess numbers have been really bad. I believe last year only 8 percent of the hunters taged out.

so what does this have to do with a "177 fort rock buck?
did y ou see one? kill one with your truck?

I take it that you are not an oregon license/tag holder In oregon 100 series hunts are buck deer. 77 a unit number. 177 is the buck deer tag for the 77 unit, fortrock.

What I was meaning is that it is sad that the Fort Rock unit is now only 8 Percent sucessfull for deer. I can remember in the late 90's when the unit fell to 25 percent sucessfull and that was a really low number for the unit. I know Interstate last year saw one of its lowest sucess rates in the last ten years at 31 percent sucess. Usually the unit runs between 38 and 43 percent, and a couple of years that the weather was great for hunting the sucess was at 48 percent. I believe that was back in 05.

I know myself I rarely road hunt and work very hard beating the brush when I hunt. However its sometimes is easy just to get in the truck and drive around after you have busted your ass every day for several days without seeing much game.

ah gotcha, for some reason when i read the title of the thread saying
"177 fort rock buck" i just assumed i would see, wait for it, a "177 fort rock buck"?

stupid me, and baltz, i bet you have quit a few big ol' bucks on your wall, not me, but i am an oregon tag holder, been one for quit a while, someday?

so the post dont have anything at all to do with , not only a 177" buck, but no bucks whatsoever?

just a random "i went for a drive and seen some deer"?

interesting.

i guess i still dont quit follow.....................

IF you had a 177 tag you might see that i'm fishing for another experienced deer hunter. With the 177 tag this year, that may want to share the hunt. Right now i'm solo on this hunt and am deciding on which camp to set up. Should i bring the full camp, wall tent/samurai on car hauler which i would do if i had camp partners. Or the small camp, dome tent, coleman stove under tarp that fits in back of pickup. or something inbetween. I know the area, I know the deer, I have all the gear, I have time to do a 15 day hunt with prescouting days ontop. I know where i'm hunting and the potential of large bucks in this area.

Interesting approach. Maybe someone will answer you speaking in riddles. Quite a camp you two might have. Rather than tell each other what you each saw each day you could act it out. Good luck.

Good luck in finding your hunting partner there Baltz. You must be a very interesting fellow. Not talking bad about you by no means, just a very weird way to post.

One more scouting trip done and i have camp picked. I have my main hunting plan done and the rifle sighted in. Practice free hand will continue. Good luck to you baltz!
I have a friend that goes over to Beaver marsh, they have a big group in the same camp for about forty years now, they always kill bucks every year and have a great time.
Hope the roads are not to dusty, might be a dry year with no rain!

8 DAYS, I'll be packing camp by this weekend. Last summer contract is done tomorrow unless it grows. Might set camp early and do some bear/cougar hunting---------------------------------------------------------------------------------support your local guzzlers. OHA life member, lapine oregon

Not a 177" buck, but a mature 4x4 with a big body and lots of meat.

I was hunting an area with a large # of commercial firewood sales. still hunting through the lodgepole thickets, old clear cuts with thining done several years ago and oldgrowth mixed lodgepole/ponderosa areas. This photo should give you an idea of this bucks bedroom/breakfast area http://www.monstermuleys.info/photos/user_photos/5820imgp0308-1.jpg ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------support your local guzzlers. Way to get it done Richard. Congratulations on a Nice Buck.
I saw the other photos of him and he had a nice layer of fat on him.

Yep he looked very healthy.

If there is any proof of a man in a hunt it is not whether he killed a deer or elk but how he hunted it.

All cut, ground, wraped and in the freezer. got about 40lb of grind, 10lb of stew, 20lb of steaks, 10lb of roast. Not my biggest buck but a respectable ammount of meat. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------support your local guzzlers. OHA life member, lapine oregon
