My buddy and I have drawn the Steens for deer, Oct 1-12. We are heading up there this week to do some scouting. We could sure use some tips on where to start. I certainly don't expect info. on any secret honey holes, but we would appreciate any direction that MM members can give us. Thanks.

How serious are you, and what kind of buck's are you looking for? Are you just trying to fill your tags? The Deer #s are not good, for a nice Buck you will be hunting a needle in a hay stack.

Let me know...

kickerbuck is right. Its not what it use to be, but with patience and LUCK you might get lucky...

Oh and don't shoot the spikes and forkey's!!! Let 'em grow...of course thats just my 2 cents!

best of luck.

Hey MTShasta, how was your scouting trip? Are you still looking for help ? You never replied to your first post. I would be happy to help you, just need to know the type of hunting you plan on doing.

Just got back from my Steens sheep hunt. Ram down!! Anyway, I seen a 150+ 4 point in Big Indian, and a 170+ 5 point out past the towers! The deer numbers were way down though, so good luck!

Kickerbuck,
My ram scored 159 6/8. My goal was a 160, so not to bad for a rookie sheep hunter! I had the second season Steens hunt.

Cool! Any pics? The Deer #s are low, That is great that you saw a few Bucks. I had the rifle tag last year, you have to have a little luck to get a nice buck in the steens. Congrats to you and your Sheep.

Steens 160 class ram!

It is a unforgiving mountain! I shot my ram in Pike Creek, and it was a brutal pack out. Lucky for me, I had three other buddies to suffer through it with me. I shot him on opening morning, so our dogs were not barking yet! As all of us hunters know, it was worth it!!
