I am curious if anyone has hunted this unit. First time hunting this area. I have hunted Fort Rock Unit with success for a dink but its the meat. This year I am lookin to bag a big deer. So
anyone know where the hot spots are for this unit?

The paulina unit is a very dry unit. Very limited summer water available. If you want to hunt it with any hope of killing a mature buck, hunt the areas with good escape cover near permanent water. The crater is a national monument, so that removes the lakes. Paulina creek has some potential but since it is so close to easy access expect company. The southwest corner has some water in the marshes but you will have lots of company. You could hunt near the guzzlers spread throughout the unit, But the bow hunters have abused these water sources for many years. You can hunt the cattle tanks out east but expect a lot of company. There are some seeps up high just below the monument boundry, very thick and steep but it is where i would spend most of my time. It will be a very frustrating hunt, for every deer you see, i bet you will not see 20 others that busted you first. I was out bear hunting the west side of paulina, Saw several doe and did cut some big buck tracks. There are a few around but do not be suprised if you hunt all 12 days, daylight to dark without firing your rifle. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------support your local guzzlers.
