Anybody bowhunt Mt. Emily for elk this year? I have 14 NR points and should draw in 2012 or 2013. Just curious what kind of quality hunt you experienced.

I doubt any unit will excite me much after this season anyway. Scored a 330" bull in a non-trophy New Mexico elk unit this year.

ANYONE that draws this unit will be more than happy with their outcome! I have been in this unit many time and boy-oh-boy if I only had an archery tag would it be well....just awesome!!!

Everyone that I know that has drawn this tag has never come home unhappy with the quality of the animals seen. Sure not everyone gets one, but the ones I've seen taken were all dandy's! I don't know anyone this year who hunted it but ask blue-moutain-outfitters on MM. He will tell you all about it!

best of luck to ya!

I don't have anything to report as far as the archery hunt goes but I've got a couple buddies who drew their big bull rifle tags this year, hunt opens next weekend. I've spent some time in there and it's a great unit, but it will kick your ass! Very tough country, and very steep if you want to find elk... it would appear to be difficult country for archery tackle but if a guy dont mind working hard he should have success.

Save your points for the other two units. This unit has great potential and holds some great bulls but the general (spike elk hunters) screw up most of the hunting. You can get away from them but you will have to go deep. Also Oregon has a rifle Cow tag that runs durring the archery season and this rifle tag incorporates a great part of the unit. Yep this could be an awesome hunt but Oregon needs to figure out how to manage trophy units. Wenaha and Walla Walla would be my choice if I had to do it all over again.

If you take your kids hunting when they
are young you wont be hunting your kids
when they get older!

Haven't been there myself, but I've known a few people with the tag the last 2 years. Nothing but great things to say about it and how many big bulls they encountered. It's archery of course, but they all had encounters with 320+ and some bigger bulls and they shot a couple 300+ bulls. Don't think you can expect much more than that from Oregon with an archery tag. If I could draw there is no way I would wait a lot longer for one of the other tags.

I hunted it in 2009. I did see some nice bulls and did miss one, and killed a 250ish 6x6. I did not run into any of the spike, deer, or cow elk hunters. And yes it is deep and steep. But you do not have to go in deep or steep to find elk. I did not see many elk in the wilderness canyon when I was there and it is plenty deep and steep. The bulls will go to the cows during the rut and I did not see many cows in there. The bulls may retreat back to there when the rut is over.

Hey Zim,

Funny I'm in the same boat as you with 14 NR pts next year. Since they give so few tags to us NR guys it could be a while. :)

Like you I've started thinking ahead to the next couple of years and hope I draw. I'm wondering about a great guide in the area to help increase the odds. May not be affordable, but I'd like to see who anyone might recommend here or in the Walla Walla or Wenaha units.

Thanks for any input you or anyone else has.

Most people will say Bob Staples from Blue Mountain Adventures from Lagrande. I haven't heard or seen any pictures of 2011 results. I am waiting to see what they did. I know he was at Mt. Emily for the rifle bull tag but have no imput on his outcome. Waiting Bob if you read this.Cheers.

remember there is actually only 1 non resident tag that can be drawn in that unit. The stats show there are 2 but one goes to an outfitter every year.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-04-11 AT 08:29AM (MST)[p]Hello Ryan,

Just reading your post. Thanks for the kind words guys! I am just doing last minute laptop things, getting ready to hop on my cruise ship here is Long Beach, CA and head to sunny n WARM Cabo and Puerto Vallerta with my two boys!!!!

Mt Emily is as good as elk hunting as Oregon has. Its only as good as you can hunt, however. We did not take any monster bulls out of there this past fall tho. It is not cause we didnt see any.....Our hunters either missed or literally could not get to them. However, They did say to have ANYONE wanting to talk to them as a reference, give their name n numbers out.

We did take a couple 330-335 bulls though. We did not see as many 370+ bulls as usuall this year tho. Elk were not in the "normal" areas as in the past.

Guys, if I was a NR, and had the chance to draw this tag, I would draw it in a heart beat!!!!!

We guide on Private and Public lands, so if interested in using our services, let me know. We also have a packing service with mules, if needed.

Feel free to call me or visit my website,

For me even applying for this hunt it will depend on a couple other draw results. I know Wyoming elk for sure. We have max points there and could draw. I forgot what else but I know there's other results should be posted prior to OR app deadline.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-06-11 AT 02:57PM (MST)[p]Another good outfitter is Outback Outfitter. They have a great reputation with pictures and refrences to prove it. Plus they are the only outfitter that can guide legally in the wilderness. They would be my first pic.

Was that person involved in that headon wreck on of your customers from second season? I heard someone say this. Just curious. I heard that they had to be towed from the 3128 road. Hopefully no injuries.

Well I failed to draw at Wy or Az. Chance in NM only bout 8% so siding toward burning my elk points here on Emily. Any other NR planning to apply? How many points?

Only one non resident will draw the tag.....other non resident tag goes to an outfitter....correct me if I am wrong Bob.

There were 2 non-res who applied in 2011 with 13 pts and 1 of them pulled the tag. Assuming we're still talking about Mt Emily archery elk.....254R

So the guy who didn't draw will have 14 pts going into this year if he applies again, and for what it's worth there were 7 non-res who applied with 12pts last year. There are 42 non-res who have 15+ pts so the OP could be a lock with 17.

LBR

Just saw the OP said he has14 pts.....it all depends on what the non-res point savers apply for. There are 105 non-res with more elk points than the OP but impossible to predict what they'll do.

Who is OP? I saw someone post on another forum that they had 14 and were applying this year.

Oh ya haha. I went ahead and applied for it today, but may change to BP if I draw in Utah. Did you apply for this hunt too?

Zim,

I have the same problem as you. I have a good chance of drawing an archery elk tag in UT and have not drawn a tag anywhere else yet. The thought of hundreds of spike hunters in the field at the same time as the Mt Emily LE hunt doesn't exactly excite me though, especially since there is talk that ODFW might make some changes for the betterment of this hunt next year.

Since OR allows you to change your app up until June 1 and we should have UT results prior to then, I was leaning towards applying for the hunt and then changing my app if I am fortunate enough to draw in UT which sounds exactly like the strategy you are using. Tomorrow is the OR draw deadline as you know so I guess I better make a decision soon!

If they take the spike hunters out we'd probably both be screwed because several would likely drop down from Weneha, or emerge from BP only. I kind of like the spike situation because I have a buddy there who would hunt with me.

Zim,

I had the same concerns as you regarding jumping units if the proposed changes went through. It is my understanding though that the proposed changes will also apply to the Wenaha and WallaWalla as well. If that is the case, we are all in the same boat again though I agree the hunt would be more attractive for the "point bankers". With only one NR tag, it won't take much to throw the whole "points needed" for this hunt completely out of kilter to the bad for those of us at the fourteen point level. With that being said, I applied for the hunt though I am really hoping for the UT elk tag...

LAST EDITED ON May-16-12 AT 07:39AM (MST)[p]Hope one of us get it, but I have a feeling it's going to a 15 point holder I saw post on another site.

Good luck? Haha! :) Well, At least I wish us all good luck on drawing tags somewhere without bad overlaps.

I do have a slammer backup plan. With 4 points I am guaranteed an Iowa archery deer tag. No small consolation.

Well our odds are dropping by the minute! That makes 3 of us, plus the 1 unsuccessful pooler last year if he re-applies. There were only 2 from the pool last year.

Sure made it nice when they went to 2 1/2% NR unguided. Really dying to burn points, cut ties and bail on OR.

No ccincidence SFW doesn't bother "rescuing" the wildlife there with a chapter, with so few decent tags to auction and profit from.

Well After a pile of USUCS everywhere I hit a totally unexpected jackpot yesterday. New Hampshire trophy bull moose zone C2. Draw odds were 1% even with my 8 points there. Now I sure hope I don't draw Mt Emily, and one of you MMers gets it.

Nice! I'm worried for you. Once lady luck is on your side it usually keeps coming. Should know tomorrow. Good luck on your Moose hunt.

I can squeeze it in if I have to, but just not the year considering Illinois to Oregon to New Hampshire distances! Haha. Could deal with a WY lope tag if I drew, but I'm sure one of you others would appreciate the Emily tag more than me this year. Wish OR had a refund option like most states. Helps everyone involved.

Whew! Dodged as bullet there! 4 USUCS.

Now can concentrate my vac days on New Hampshire & Iowa.

So did any of you MMers end up with this Emily tag???

OK well not sure if any of you guys ended up putting in for this hunt with 14 points last year, but I am burning my Wyoming points to hunt there this year, so you won't have me to compete with this year. I'm doing points only in OR. Should only be 2 or 3 guys in the 15 point pool, maybe just one.

Well Zim.....I've been keeping an eye on you and a couple of other guys for Mt. Emily. Problem is I only have 14 pts for this year, so it seems I'm one behind your group.

I know of a Resi that had it this last fall. They saw lots of bulls but held out for smoker........tag soup!

Thanks for the heads up!

LAST EDITED ON Jan-29-13 AT 12:07PM (MST)[p]Looks like only 1 tag offered to a non-res out of the points pool this year, the other goes to an outfitter. Your going to need 16 to draw. Looks like 4 non-res with 15 points and 1 with 16 going in this year. Next 2 years you should have a 50% chance to draw. I know, Oregon sucks and there's no signs of things getting any better. I can't imagine waiting 15+ years to hunt an area where if things go good you can connect on a 330+ if they don't go good, tag soup.

When I started in the points games in 1996 never did I imagine so many states (8/10) would stoop to cheapening sportsmen's points down the road. But money wins out over ethics. So now it's all about damage control.
