Returned from the chesnimnus unit. Off the main road heading up through Zumwalt we seen a herd of about 150-200 before the nature conservancy land then around 600-800 on the conservancy land then another past the conservancy land that was another 150-200.opening morning not even one shot in our area. my dad was back at the truck before myself and a rancher pulled up and told him." I could of told you there was no elk in this area, two weeks ago they were everywhere in here but we herded them out of the area ( onto private land) when we moved our cows out". Now if they want to play that game, the ranchers should pay$42.50 a head.( price of elk tag) The elk they moved were on national forest land along with their cattle before they moved them out onto the flats. This still could of worked out for us but it appeared they were not hunting the elk on the private land because there was no shots in the lower area either.hunting on the fringes of the private land has worked out for us in the past but not this year. Each time we hunt that unit we run into more land being locked up and access to other areas being taken away. Might be time to move on or buy some mules.

How far up did you go on the main road? This unit holds a few elk and yes some of them move down to private or the conservancy after rifle deer and snow starts. Friends went 4 for 5 this season all on public land, 3 being nice branch bulls.

PM me if you want to discuss locations...I'm intersted in what area you focused on.
