Proposed road closures in Oregon

What are your thoughts? They hit home for me. The plan in the Wallowa Whitman national forest has a paved road that I use closed during elk season.

Its all a bunch of BS!!! Think about all the locals that use those roads to go out and cut wood for their families! Or the loggers that send semi's into certain area's to take lumber!

Its another way for the liberal wacko's to take more away from everyone of us that use and love outdoors...

Yesterday I talked to a lady at the Forest service office in Baker. She said that they will not be issuing tickets for the first year. So when I have to walk down a paved road to go to where I elk hunt, I will have people driving by that won't even know the road is closed. They do not plan to do any more than have a brochure at a turn out to let the public know. Then when they do start writing tickets they can fine you up to $5,000.00. Thanks for coming and don't forget to pay your fine on your way out. I feel bad that it had to be my road before I got mad. Somehow we have to stand up for our rights. Where is Paul Revere when you need him? ?The liberals are coming The Liberals are coming?

+ 1 DZ!

I hope someday all the liberals will be "pushed" out of Oregon. I know its only a dream but hot dog, it really makes my stomach turn when I think about all the garbage we have to deal with...and A LOT more to come I'm sure.

Talking about idiots....About 6 yrs ago we were in NE oregon in a very remote area on an elk hunt. We found a herd of elk one evening and the next morning we got up at 2AM to get back into the same area. As we found the herd and made our way over to them, we then noticed a group of people across the canyon from us watching with bino's. They knew we were hunting for the orange being worn. All the sudden they started to scream, and blew whistles! They of course scared the elk out of the area and probably to the next state for as much noise they were making! I was so pissed for what those tree hungin, wolf crazed idiots did and for a second thought about shooting at them! We ran into some other hunters that said the same thing happened to them. A few days later we came across their camp and I won't say what we did but they left in very poor shape.

These road closures is just one more way for the liberals to take away our rights, our GOD GIVEN RIGHTS.

I'm not in favor of closing any area off but we have about 100 times more roads open in the USFS than hunters need. road hunters are the big losers

I'm not familiar with with the Wallowa area so I won't comment but in general I can go with some road closures. like everything we go from one extreme to another, quads on every ridge top to no vehicles on paved roads.

Which god grants access to forest service roads?

I hiked 128 miles on one of my 6 hunts last year. I'm not affraid of long distances. What I don't like is when they try to shut an area off completely. They are saving the elk for the wolves. It is in the plan. It takes your road to be closed say 20 miles from where you normally hunt before it gets to you. Maybe next time it will be all access including foot trafic. Where do you draw the line before it means something to you. I'm not a hound hunter but I can promise you they are coming for me and you.

In a quick look through this I see bull trout not wolves . it started in 2005 before wolves were a major issue.

In any event if you're right and it's wolf related I'm against it, even if it's bull trout related it's a poor excuse, but it seems bigger than either. good luck fighting it, I've been involved in dealing with a bull trout and steelhead experimental reintoduction in my irrigation district for about 7 years and our opinions mean jack.

Where is the proof this is a 7 year plan to close lands for wolf habitat?

I'm not one to care about the hiking distances, and at first I did think about having to hike even further UNTIL I really checked into what this is going to do...its the locals in Wallowa County that are going to really get the "shaft" on this new law!

I am no expert on this. But the lady at the Forest service that I talked to had some remarks around the elk needing to stay on the NF so the wolves would not be coming down to the private property as much. They feel if they can slow down the hunting of the elk in the upper reaches of the Imnaha system that the elk will stay there longer.

I am all for closing road's that are not major access road's for forest user's of any walk of life. That is were the problem lies, they have to take everything to far. I think it a total crock of BS that any national forest, state or BLM should be able to close major access road's of any kind, with the exception of seasonal closure's to protect wintering herd's of critter's. Spur's, One time logging road's thing's of that nature, I am all for. If you give them an inch they will take 10 mile's. The sad thing is it's only going to get worse. If the lib's have it their way the whole farging state will be wilderness and we all have to ride a skate board everywhere. HAWK

And if the conservatives have their way public land would be sold to the highest bidder .

Somewhere in the middle is common ground, for the most part other than the wolf BS it seems to work out.

I just recieved this email. Hope to fill the house.

FOREST ACCESS FOR ALL:

Attention to all who refuse to lose access to their forest: On April 6, 2012 at 6 PM, there will be a public forum at the Blue Mountain Conference Center (404 Twelfth Street, LaGrande, OR).
Kerry White, of Montana's Citizens for Balanced Use, is the guest speaker and will be discussing the appeal process on the Forest Service's Decision to CLOSE almost 4,000 miles of roads in the Wallowa Whitman National Forest. This is an issue to all who use the forest for camping, wood cutting, berry picking, grazing, mining, etc. The Forest Service will issue a fine of up to $5,000 and up to 6 months imprisonment or both if you are violation of this absurd plan. We must unite so our voices are heard. The appeal deadline is April 30, 2012. Please Join Us.
"there is also a stihl chainsaw and a 2000 Watt Honda gnerator that will be raffled off"

The problem I see is the higher and mightier attitude of many hunters. Close all the roads is what they seem to be suggesting.
It seems to be all about them! Many travel over for deer and elk season, spend a week or less here and go back to where ever they came from. Just to repeat the process in a year or two.
I also understand the whole, its for habitat improvement arguement. Do I buy it, no not really.
There are way more people in the woods for all different reasons all through the year for more than just hunting camp. ODFW needs to figure things out, and I think they can do it if they are willing to buck the masses, we know what really needs to be done. Just go ask any government hunter how many cougar have been killed in the the cougar control units! Roads may play a small part in herd health, but it is a minor sliver.
Don't buy the smoke and mirrors of the saving the deer by shutting out every other public user of the WW forest.

6:00 tonight at the Blue MT conference center. Everyone that can make it should. Hope to see you there.

I think there was 600 plus people there.

Kerry from CBU in Montana came and helped us understand what our appeals need to state.

I hope everyone gets involved no matter if you think there should be more or less roads open. They are our roads we paid for them. The Forest belongs to the people.

You can go to this web site and see what they are doing to help us keep our freedoms. http://balanceduse.org/
