ODF&W at there best!

I just heard that ODF&W raised the wenaha tags from 20 to 35 for both archery and rifle. ODF&W really doesn't care about having a trophy unit. And to raise the tag numbers after the application deadline. Bunch of BS!

is this a fact ?? or just what somebody told you?
i have heard this rumor for a while but i do not see it on there website.

I heard it from a very reliable source! It just came about the middle of this week. Doubt it would be on there website yet. ODF&W just had a series of public meetings and made the decision this week.

Either shoot them or let the wolves have them. Either way it is coming to an end soon. Ten years from now, we will all be talking about the good old days before the wolves got here. I lived through it once in Idaho.

They are also drastically reducing spike tags, and changing the archery spike to a controlled hunt. These steps should reduce poaching and will surely reduce spike harvest, leading to more mature bulls. One of the best moves they have made in years in my opinion.

Just looked up the proposed tag numbers for the rifle hunts on the 3 units. 10 more any bull rifle tags, and about 400 less rifle spike tags between the 3 units is the proposal. That has to help increase the number of mature bulls on these units. For those that want trophy elk hunting opportunities in Oregon this should be great news.

Kill 7-8 more mature bulls, but save 50+ spikes to become mature bulls. Other than the wolves, this is good news for those units.

Washington raised the tags numbers in the Wenaha units also this year. The game depts get lots of pressure from hunters to give out more tags and they are trying to give a little I think. Hopefully they keep a close eye on the harvest numbers and adjust as needed, With the open country in these units the mature bulls can take a hard hit quick however some guys go in there and are happy to kill the first 300 inch bull they see or arent in shape and want to kill a bull to get the heck out of there!Hopefully this will help the points creep in Oregon but would have been nice to know before the draw but maybe its just a rumor too?nwhunter

I just think its sad that a unit of this calibur can only handle 30 trophy bulls taken out of it each year. Just goes to show that the herds are not in that great of shape. Just my 2 cents.

You guys are a bunch of cry babies. No matter what ODF&W does someone will complain. This will do absolutely no harm to the elk herd. And there are way more elk in north east Oregon then there ever was historically. Am I saying kill them all no but this tag increase has zero negative side affects.

You're right about not harming the elk herd...

"there are way more elk in north east Oregon then there ever was historically"

Can I ask where did you get this info???

This is a step in the right direction! I been asking them to eliminate ANY other hunts during the big bull hunts in these units. After waiting for 12-16 years for a tag, I think those hunters should have a quality hunt, without 100s of other spike hunters around. Looks like they are compromising.....I will take it!
