LAST EDITED ON Jun-19-12 AT 10:49PM (MST)[p]Well my wife cashed in her 21 Points and drew the Umatilla No.3 any deer hunt on the Umatilla National Wildlife Refuge. Her hunt is the last of 4 hunts on the refuge (all doe hunts) so the bucks will most likely be a little spooky by the time her hunt rolls around. We are already planning a trip over there in a couple weeks and I am gathering phone numbers of bio's and refuge managers. We plan on purchasing a rifle barreled shotgun with a scope as this hunt is open to either shotgun or muzzleloader. Scopes are not allowed on the muzzleloaders but they are allowed on the shotgun. We plan on hunting all five days if need be. She won't look a gift horse in the mouth and any "decent" buck is in trouble.

If anyone cares to share any knowledge, tips or tricks they would be much appreciated.

Thank You!

Congrats to you and the wife! You will have a good time and maybe even bag a big buck! I hunted it last year and missed the biggest buck of my life at 50 yards on the run! I about puked! LOL! Frustrating last year as the corn was not cut yet! Call me if you want to talk! Send me a pm and I will give you my number!

Weather sucked (HOT), deer were bedded just after after daylight and came out after dark. Saw a few toads but just because they live on a refuge they were still smart. She killed an older 3x3 at 10:15 on the last morning after a 1/2 mile stalk and she shot it at 95 yards after it stood because the sun was on its bed.

Sort of a bummer to wait that long and have mother nature through a wrench in the plans. Glag you guys were successful.

That's hunting!

It was a truely rewarding experience for her and she will forever remember the hunt. She had NUMEROUS close calls and a couple of misses. It would of been awesome to tag a monster, but she looks at the buck she got and is satisfied because she worked her tail off for it.

Sometimes if they are too easy the memories aren't as significant. don't underestimate the value she gained from all of the other opportunities. I have always felt that our chance encounters create a better hunter, sounds like she got some solid time in the field. Congrats to both of you

My favorite hunts are because they were with friends and family not just because "I got one".
