Anyone draw 177 this year I'll be back hunting out of the same camp as last year. Trying to kill another mature buck like my 2011 5yr old

It is really a pleasure, in this day and age, to see that there are still hunters out there that take proper care of their game. It's really a shame there are so many that do not!
Good luck this year!

Report: Very dry, Very crunchy. Tag soup. 11.5 days of boot work. Got a lot of good scouting done for next time. I did find where several mature bucks where hanging out. But never got close enought to see antler. Not suprising most of the bucks where in areas with no one else making boot tracks. Sometimes in beds watching passing road hunters. Where the bucks are, it will take moisture to quite my foot steps. Total buck sitings 2 1yr old spikes, 1 2yr old spork. I did spot one probable mature buck at first light one day, As soon as I spotted him at about 600yds, A truck drove down a road behind me about 800yrds. As soon as he heard the gravel crunching, he took off at a full sprint. Road hunters have the deer very well educated, By the time a buck reaches 6-7yrs of age He is very road smart. The illegal road drivers where thick. The new MVUM rules where completely ignored by most. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------support your local guzzlers. OHA life member, lapine oregon

Thanks for the report. From everything you write and previous hunting pictures you have posted I have do doubt your a good hunter. So sad to see Oregon deer population so bad that a good hunter only saw three dinky bucks in 11.5 days of hunting. I wonder how the hunting will be in 5-10-15 years from now. ODFW will give the excuse that sucess rates were low this year due to dry hunting conditions, but in reality the deer populations just plum suck.

There are a lot of deer where I hunt. Just no visability. Swamps, lodgepole thickets, pumice flats with old growth lodgepole mixed with new growth. Just an out right hard hunt. Makes it interesting. Some areas of Oregon have good deer numbers. It just takes boot time and a bit of moisture to quite the woods down.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------support your local guzzlers. I drew the 177 tag again. I'll be setting camp 9/25/13 for a full season hunt. The plan is to hunt out of same area.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------support your local guzzlers. OHA life member, lapine oregon

I was on a BLM fire crew in Ft Rock in 1979. I didn't see many deer but did see a fair amount of antelope to the east. Are all those alfalfa fields a big draw for mule deer now? I've got about 10 points for OR deer.

If you have ten points don't burn them on Fort Rock. Decent unit if you get away from the roads but I wouldn't even burn 1 point there. If you have ten I would look at a late season muzzy hunt over in the desert.

Fort rock is not a 10 point tag. The town of fort rock is near 4 units. Paulina, wagon tire, silver lake, fort rock. The fire might have been in any of these units. None are worth 10 points. I assume you are a nonresident?

Shopping, Packing, Planning proceeds. Ordered a climbing tree stand for a few spots to get a better view. Hope I can stand to use it.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------support your local guzzlers. OHA life member, lapine oregon

Good luck Baltz. I think hunting conditions might be hard this fall due to lack of water. I think you might be on to something with the tree stand idea instead of walking through the noisy woods this fall.

It is wet here with a wet pattern coming in. Snow up high. Should get some deer moving to the high staging area I hunt. 5500' in the mixed bitterbrush/lodgepole/ponderosa. UPS tracking says stand is not going to make it before I leave. 3 days past promised delivery date when ordered. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------support your local guzzlers. Saw nothing worth shooting. Did have a nice bull at 50yrds for about 5 minutes. Cows caught my scent and ran off, He hung out watching my direction for about 1 minute. Then followed the cows. That was the high point of 14 days boot time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------support your local guzzlers. OHA life member, lapine oregon

LAST EDITED ON Oct-14-13 AT 08:30PM (MST)[p]>Did you see much hanging in
>camps?

I hunted out of camp the first 11 days, Never moved the truck except to pick up glens 3x3 1/4 mile from camp, until the last few days I drove about 1 mile for 3 evening hunts. Then on last day I hit a GPS mark I had scouted. 26 rd miles from camp, Got there in the dark, left in the dark. So I never saw a camp to see any hanging. I spent 95% of all daylight during season hunting in my boots. 5% at most in camp eating lunches ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------support your local guzzlers. Drew the fort Rock tag again for 2014. Camp will be a few miles east from the last few years. Change of scenery.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------support your local guzzlers. OHA life member, lapine oregon
