You should have bought a lottery ticket if you drew with 5 points, then used the money to buy a Colorado tag.

That aside you're in for a tough hunt if you want a big buck. I hunt chuckar there in the late fall and winter and the quality has kept slipping from what I see.

I had my last tag 10 years ago and got a good buck but it wasn't easy. the deer can be anywhere and lots of places they're nowhere to be found. I'd just take off on the skyline road and work down the two tracks with a quad glassing your way down. easy glassing and very few hunters will be your only advantages .

It's about as good as it gets for Oregon so no matter what happens you lucked out.

Anyone hunted it in the last 5 years? What expectations are realistic? 170, 180 , 190

I know deer numbers are down, but I only have one tag. I plan on spending the full season there plus 3 or 4 scouting trips before.

Any info appreciated.

I know a guy who hunted it about 4 years ago. Hes a hard hunter and spent the whole season looking for a good buck and came home empty handed. They saw a couple 24" 4 points in the 160-170 range and I think they would have been tickled to kill a solid 175.

My opinion is don't worry too much about my story or any other that might lessen the hunt. Just go hunt it and make the best of it. It is still probably the best unit in OR so it has the potential to kick out a pig of a buck. Have a blast and I hope you kill a whopper!

There is potential for 200+, but the reality is if you want a buck 170 is what you're looking for . from there on it's your call, that's how trophy hunting is.

Most bucks I've seen live and in the pictures the locals have are 150 type bucks, 170 tops and few of those.

You have a tag about as good as it gets for Oregon, but it's Oregon so keep it in perspective. I'd hunt the Trouts every year if I could.

I appreciate the feed back. I have spent quite a bit of time in the unit during the summer, but never been there during hunting season.

I still want to talk to as many people as I can find that have hunted it recently to see what their seeing during the hunt.

Send a pm

Thanks
