Having never hunted this unit before I could use a little help. I'm going up in late July to look the unit over and get acquainted with the roads and geography. Not worrying about finding elk at that time, just to get acclimated. Have the hair tag, but will probably only hunt antlers.
I would really appreciate any words of wisdom from those of you that know the unit and care to help this old hunter out.

Heading out on Tuesday morning at 0-dark thirty and going up to John Day. Will be looking the unit over, getting to know roads and checking for camp sites.
I've gone over all the old searchable threads on this site and a couple of others. Probably be a five day trip.
