so I was lucky enough to draw this tag this year. I'm heading down for a scouting trip this weekend to start learning the area( not looking forward to this heat spell!!)

anyway- has anyone had any experiance with that area/hunt?

what general parts of the unit should a guy start looking around in?
I wanted to say "I'm not looking for any honey holes",but that gets old too.

I plan on taking a ton of pictures and, "if" I get some free time, would love to post them up.

anyway- what's your take on this hunt?

It is all about weather and migration. Not a very big area. Local deer numbers are in the crapper, I hunted the archery hunt in there for many years, coyotes are the main culprit. Please take a small bore rifle and go to work. Hopefully you get a little weather in late October and get the deer moving outta Idaho. It can be good if you are there at the right time and the deer cooperate. I would take any 170 or better. There are some bucks that hang in the private around Jordan Valley, try to get some access. Good luck

I had the tag in '05. The biggest buck killed was big non-typical. I ended up with a 22" 4 point, the best buck I could find in 6 days of hard hunting. I know two guys that have had it since, one party came home empty handed, the other came home with 3 small 4 points, that was last year. Like said above, with out the migration from Idaho, its a tough hunt. Be realistic and don't set your expectations too high. I would not pass a 150 buck unless I knew something could stroll in from Idaho. Scouting now would be useless in my opinion, unless you want to learn the country. Pray for early snow in Idaho! I've heard its good when that happens, but it hasn't in a LONG time.

Definitely some remote country, I would think that it would be kind of a unique and fun hunt. Right now there is a big fire down there burning toward that area though, might change things pretty dramatically if a bunch of that stuff burns up.

thanks for the input guys.
are there any places that are remote enough to backpack into?

I sure hope we get some early snow this year, sounds like that's key.
thanks again

I don't believe backbacking is going to help out much. There's nothing remote enough in my opinion, besides it's not uncommon to be single digit temps at night. I shot my buck right before dark and the whole deer was frozen solid before daylight the next morning! I would reccomend a wall tent and bring wood, there's not much wood there.

I know the unit well and can give you the info needed to get into where the deer are. When you have a BLM map in front of you contact me. The 2004 Jordan Valley surface management status is available from this website http://plicmapcenter.org/OR/ I just got a new one this week. Do not expect to drive around and shoot a nice buck. Lots of boot time and passing up the average bucks will be needed. PM me or email and i'll give you the Info.

Baltz, give me 1 week to get the map you are talking about, allowing a couple days for shipping, and I will take you up on your offer.

Now I got this muzzle loader rifle issue to deal with, use mine or buy a new bad ass one? we'll deal with this issue next week:)

Better keep an eye on the Long Draw fire, this hunt depends on deer crossing in from Idaho and at the rate it's going it might get to Idaho.

Stay thirsty my friends

I know a guy from Hermiston that had the tag a few years ago and shot a dink. He probably could have got a bigger one if he would have had a better "guide".

sorry, I don't get on here much anymore.

BALTZ- that is a nice offer, I'll try and round up that map and get in touch with you.

HANGINGMEAT- Did you draw the same tag?

sounds like that fire has done A lot of damage! I sure hope it doesn't screw the hunt up!

I looked at the longdraw map yesterday. It never touched the tag area from what i could tell. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------support your local guzzlers. OHA life member, lapine oregon

The fire didn't get to the hunt area.
The hunts getting closer now- Can't wait!

I know Idaho bucks are crossing right now. They will dump off south mt if it snows good up high but you want the deer from the tables to cross, for your best chance at real big deer. Look to the south end of unit.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------support your local guzzlers. OHA life member, lapine oregon

Finally some rain! Things are moving, I've been cutting wood this week after the rain, I've seen 5 bucks that made it through (2 forkies, 2 decent 3x4s and one big 4x5) That's more than I saw all summer and deer season combined! They are out and moving with the moisture and Fall temps. Hopefully this will mean success for you on your hunt!

Has anybody had amy luck yet? Hopefully we get a little colder weather in the next few days. A little snow would also be great. Good luck to all.

Wondering if anyone did any good this year. I had this tag in '05. I like to see how people do even though I never plan to hunt it again.
