My son has the Imnaha youth Cow tag. Wondering how the archery hunters feel about it. I don't want to step on any toes but I do want to take him out when the Bulls a screaming. What do you guys think? The season starts tomorrow and goes till the end of the year.

Waiting for it to cool off a bit. I want to be back in the woods a few miles to make it a full elk experience for him. And the rut is a great time to be out there.

Congrats Don on the tag for your youngin! Hope you have a blast!

you won't need to go far to get a cow in that unit...in fact drive up XXXXXXX and more than likely you will run into a few or more. We were just up there last weekend and 7 cows in 3 different places ran right in front of us while driving it. oh and no it wasnt on private property :)

PM me and I'll let you know the road...or the road to park on to get into the area I'm talking about to make it a "sporting event"! Its a tough area but well worth it...

I wouldn't worry too much about archery hunters, they should know that there is a cow tag going on at the same time. Just make sure that you do everything by the book (tag your animal immediately, don't shoot from the road/across the road etc.) because you will probably be reported by someone who doesn't know about the hunt and thinks someone is poaching.
Go out next month and do some calling and see what you can get to come in. Last year I had cows on several occasions come in to bugles and cow calls within 100 yards. Too far for my skill level with a bow but a pretty easy shot with a rifle. Calling elk in is a great experience, give it a try if you can.

We went out in September and had a lot of fun. One day we had three different Cows at close range 30 yards or so. I have a video of one for about 15 min at 42 yards. The timing wasn?t right to shoot one (as we adopted 4 kids from Africa and had to make two trips over there, ya more youth hunters coming up.) so we just had fun with them. We are headed out on Saturday to see if we can't get Josiah a shot.

Well it took a couple Saturdays to get it done. We met some nice folks on the Imnaha River road. In the end we ended up getting one up in the National Forest. There were 10 and they were moving out. One gave a shot and Josiah took it. It ended up being a Bull calf. Glad to have got him one as it is his first big game animal.

Awesome! Congratulations to you and Josiah! Looks like that calf is almost as big as a full sized elk. Alot bigger than the calf we got in November. Good job sticking with it and getting the job done!
