I think I asked once b4 but what's with that herds elk, y they so call shy hunted there archery three dif season n still shy n run off freaked out, saw 50 head total set up on two bulls one nice 6 got 60 yards n cow called high pitched mew they all jumped to their feet ran off???

Like the majority of elk in this part of the country, they are waaaaayyyyy over hunted.

Upon a third read :) I think I understand what you are saying. The elk in many areas around John Day are getting wise to calls. I have seen several occasions where people will get out of their pickup and bugle or cow call from the back of their 4-wheeler. I have heard guys bragging about getting a bull to come within 100 yards while they were bugleing him in from the back of their 4-wheeler. Oddly, in each of those stories the bull would mysteriously turn tail and run, "obviously" because some one else interfered with their hunt (note the sarcasm). Elk are one of the smartest animals a person can hunt, if they associate a call or bugle with humans in any way, they will not come to that call again. Those hoochie mamma calls worked awesome for a year or two but now the elk are on to them because a bunch of people are using them.
Another problem this year is that it is still so hot that the rut is delayed, that may be a minor factor but the main problem is the overuse of calls an bugles in my opinion.

I can only speak for myself we kept calling to a min N i was 6 miles off road. By the way i' using my smart phone still learnin to use it thus the wording...

NEVER cow call any elk here in oregon! Friend that killed a big bull this season cow called twice at two different bulls and both times the bulls busted out of there! BUT even bad bugling will get a lot of bulls to respond and even come in...
just my 2 cents :)
