Quick question. My dad bought some land south southeast of Burns,OR right of the Neveda border, and he has never seen it has no clue what it even looks like. This is a typical of him to buy something because it's a "Good Deal". Any way just wondering what it's like and if there is much for critters down there and what kind?

Thanks

Must be down around McDermitt , closer to Winemucca than Burns. what does it look like? well do you like trees and beautiful scenery? well then you're not going to like it.

Depending on where is is there might be a little topography, maybe some rock, other than that sage brush and grass. a few deer and antelope , maybe some chuckar and sage grouse.

There is a reason nobody lives there. I'm not trying to be a smartazz but it's tough country to exist in. you might look at the ODOT tripcheck website it has a few cameras in SE Oregon like around Rome Junction that will give you an idea of the area.

I had a really good idea there wasn't much going on by what he paid an acre for the land. Just kind of wonder if there was much of anything to hunt there, but I imagine it's hit and miss. He told my there is suposse to be a creek and a pond on it, but that might have been a few thousand years ago too.

Its big country, and it depends on just where it is, and how many acres. in lots of it you can stand in the back of your pickup and hunt out 4 sections without moving an inch.

If nothing else there might be some chuckar on it or nearby on BLM. they're more fun than anything else to hunt anyway. as far as deer or goats go unless it's a big place or has some hay fields on or near it I wouldn't plan on too much.

There is alot of land down south near the Nevada border, safe to say that it is pretty much sage, bunchgrass and rocks. Probably your best move, even without seeing the land is to try to get some water rights for a well. Water is the key down there. If you have water you have potential. The property is probably quite remote,if it's right on the border, its a good 120+ miles from Burns. There would be some small towns closer but they are tiny, Denio, Fields, maybe McDermitt depending on where its at along the border. It could be 30-50 miles from those tiny towns too.
For animals, it really depends on your terrain, you could have rimrocks which would be great for chukar, maybe some hills and draws which could maybe have some deer, it could just be a huge piece of flat sage which would maybe have antelope from time to time, but it could also (hopefully not for your sake) be a big alkali flat which is not good for anything. Let us know what it looks like when you find out.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-21-13 AT 06:13PM (MST)[p]I work for one of the blm districts that cover that country......good antelope hunting and can be a good mule deer country depending on the area...I am curious if you meant south burns junction or burns....south of bj would make sence if it is close to nv or state line......ohhh yeah and a lot of that country went up in smoke last summer

Next time I talk to my dad I'll have to see if he has an exact location of where it is. I think he said it was close 4 sections

If it's in a good area 4 sections might be worth getting a tag and checking it out. if it's in the flats you can just do a drive by and hunt it.

I have maps of that entire area. If you give me the discription off the title, I can look it up, most likely. As I know a lot of that area, I can think of several very good areas where lots where sold cheap. You might have a diamond in the rough and not know it. Or you might not have anything if he has not paid the tax's ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------support your local guzzlers.
