Elk/Mule Deer combo

So it has been a little slow on this website lately and thought I would post a question I have always wondered about. What unit in Oregon do you think has the best overall mule deer/rocky mt elk hunting? Lots of units have decent mule deer hunting but poor elk hunting (SE Oregon). So if you had one unit to choose to both deer hunt and elk hunt every year what would it be?

Decent deer hunting compared to what? the moon?

I wouldn't call it decent deer hunting, but it's as good as Oregon gets, with ok elk hunting, Beulah.

On private land Fossil and Lookout Mountain.

Stay thirsty my friends

I would say fort rock or sprague units are good for both deer and elk, nobody I know thinks there are elk in there but I've seen some big herds around in the past.

I will say the Murderer's Creek is at least one of the best for both. Big bulls and big bucks are very possible.

If we were to take it a step further and ask what unit is best for every major big game animal, (Deer, Elk, Cougar, Bear, Antelope but not including Mountain Goats or Bighorn) I think Beulah would take it.

Really though there are alot of units in the state that have great opportunities for multiple species. I know its very popular right now to bash Oregon hunting but I'm going to be optimistic and say that it seems to be improving.

If I had to hunt only one unit for both, it would be Silvies. I have hunted it more than any other unit in the state for elk and have had moderate success over the years. I haven't deer hunted it alot, but I believe if I put the effort in to it I would do just fine. I have seen some very nice bucks there while elk hunting, one which would likey be pushing 200 gross. That was along time ago, but I believe there are still some good ones there, just not many.

It also isn't to awful difficult to draw rifle tags for and bow hunting is still general OTC. So I could hunt it every year.

Surprised in how many Fort Rock votes. Deer hunting use to be decent back in the late 90's, but as of recent I thought the success rates have been very sub-par.

Road hunter success is down. Unit is very thick where the deer are. Elk numbers are up. If you know where to look---------------------------------------------------------------------------------support your local guzzlers. OHA life member, lapine oregon

Well just my 2 cents I will go with Steens/ Juniper deer and Snake River Mt. Emily elk. JB

Going on a scouting trip over to the Fort rock and silver lake units in two weeks with my hunt'n buds, Yamsey mt. and sycan marsh areas, will report on what we see, thinking of hunting deer again in over there in 2014?
