Chesnimus elk

My partners and I will be taking our first trip to the Chesnimus unit this fall for bull elk. We have a string of mules that we will use to pack us and our gear in and hopefully some bulls out. I just ordered a map from Big Sky and have been doing some scouting via Google Earth but had a few basic questions. We plan on making at least one scouting trip over there this summer to see the lay of the land and hopefully find some potential areas to set up camp. Has anyone hunted this unit recently? Is water easily found in most of the unit to water pack animals? Any tips, hints, or suggestions you might want to share? Dont want your secret spot, just any info you might be willing to pass on. Thanks.

Hunted this unit for many years, including this last bull rifle season. We filled 11 out of 12 tags.

PM me for info...

My advise to you is get there a week early find your elk and don't waste too much time killing it. It can get very competative there. Get yourself it great shape, you may have to out run the other hunters to get to the elk first. I don't rifle hunt there anymore, not because there's a lack of elk, I just don't care for the other huters running over my back to get to the elk. Shoot me a p.m. if you would like.

The indians set up camp at Coyote Spring and shoot the hell out of the elk in the late summer.

Don't know where you're going to pack in to, but the pack trails in the bottom of Cook Creek and Cottonwood Creek look clogged with fallen snags and abandoned.

Good luck and have fun!
