LAST EDITED ON Jun-02-13 AT 08:37PM (MST)[p]Just curious if many Oregonians here hunt in Colorado or Wyoming? I'm thinking about expanding my hunting area to other states besides Oregon for obvious reasons. Do many of you have any good luck hunting these two states?

I hunt them both often. I focus on antelope in wyoming because of the availability of tags and quality. My 70 year old dad loves to hunt goats every year and I focus on some of the better units every few years. Elk and deer in wyoming are a little tougher to figure out. If you are just starting the points game there a lot of options on general elk and region deer tags.

Colorado is awesome for mule deer. 3 seasons and many options to apply or. Elk hunting is better than oregon on over the counter tags.

I'm sure someone will tell me Oregon is awesome and that I don't know what I'm talking about. Hunting mule deer in the last week of September/first week of October is the absolute worst time of the year to hunt mature mule deer. Units in Oregon give out 3 to 4 K tags instead of several hundred and the quality shows.

Colorado deer is my number one priority every deer season.

I agree with Rich, 0 point Colorado deer draws and over the counter elk tags are better than 99% of Oregon tags. but if you want the better tags you're going to need to buy a LO tag or build some points.

My favorite state to hunt is WY, but you have to draw any tag you get. the deer quailty isn't neer what CO has but elk is better.

The only problem is once you've hunted out of state Oregon hunting will seem as bad as it really is.

I've hunted Colorado for deer, we bought over the counter tags and my dad got a good buck and I got a big forkie. Alot of people running around in the general units though, at least where we were. It was a good time for sure. Alot of money, which is why I haven't been back but it was fun.

I agree!! I apply in most all western states and usually get at least one each year and they always smoke Oregon. Sad to say this but very true, with the exception of Antelope. If you can draw one the quality of the hunt is still great here.

Like any deer hunt the closer to the rut the better. the 3rd season in CO is getting close to the rut, 4th is in the rut. but like anything you get what you pay for, so the later the hunt the more the LO tag will cost you.

I've never hunted any leftover units, but I can't imagine they'd be much good considering even the low quality LO tags bring a few hundred bucks.

Pay attention to what LostinOregon says, he has seen and killed some great animals particularly in Colorado he knows both states well. JB

Leftovers isn't the way to go about it. Figure out what you want to hunt, elk, deer or antelope and I will point you in the right direction.

I have hunted both states several times and Oregon will become you backup plan after you have. :) Points are important to drawing good tags in both. You can still buy points in Wyoming this year that will help you in 2014. $30-Antelope, $40-Deer, $50-Elk.

I enjoyed hunting Wyoming for the combination of deer/antelope. It's nice, but if you are not paying attention to some things you would be very disappointed. Case in point, we hunted Region H several years in a row then a big winter hit. I have not been back but have a friend that went back to the same spots and after a week of hunting only saw one fork! This was in the same areas he had been chasing 30 inch bucks and well off the road. It will still be a few years before that area comes back. The antelope quality is not what I have seen in Oregon... but you can hunt them every year.

My favorite state so far has been Idaho. Maybe it is because I have killed all of my biggest deer there. All but one were taken on a general season tag. The down side is that Idaho's prices have gone way up and so has their wolf population. I have not been back there in many years. I keep kicking the idea around of hunting late season whitetail in Northern Idaho but have not pulled the trigger yet.

The hunt I am most excited about this year is Oregons late season blacktail. It is a love-hate relationship. The good part is that I am not spending several hundred dollars on out of state tags! I am saving that money for another trip to Africa. I think I have fallen in love with Kudu hunting!
